# Superheroes on the Moon: How Prada and NASA Created the Spacesuit of the Future for the Artemis Mission

The return of humanity to the Moon is not just a return to the past, but a step into a fundamentally new future. NASA is preparing astronauts to land on the surface of Earth's satellite with equipment that differs radically from the outdated suits of the Apollo program. Developers at Axiom Space have created a new AxEMU spacesuit, combining cutting-edge engineering solutions with the aesthetics of high fashion. Specialists from the fashion industry, specifically the brand Prada, participated in the creation of this most complex technical product.

Visually, the new suit resembles the gear of superheroes from science fiction films, but behind the white facade lies a complex life support system designed to protect a human from instant death in the vacuum of space.

### The Deadly Danger of Space

Human presence in open space without proper protection is impossible. In vacuum conditions, the body is subjected to destructive effects. Fainting occurs within 15 seconds, and death is recorded within a few minutes. The main threat lies in the lack of pressure and heat exchange.

In open space, the air in the lungs expands instantly, which can lead to the rupture of lung tissue. The boiling point of liquids drops, causing moisture in the muscles to turn into steam, resulting in severe swelling, while gas bubbles in the blood stop circulation in just a minute. Furthermore, body heat has nowhere to dissipate, which during physical exertion inevitably leads to heat stroke and organ failure.

### Technologies of High Fashion and Engineering

To counter these threats, engineers and designers developed a multi-layered protection system. The first layer is the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG). Previously, this element resembled a bulky nightgown, however, Prada specialists transformed it into an ergonomic suit with technological weaving.

To prevent overheating, a branched network of flexible tubes is integrated into the fabric. Cold water continuously circulates through them, washing away metabolic heat from the main muscle groups and directing it to the shoulder pack with the life support system. To ensure safety, the internal circuit is duplicated by a backup cooling system in case the main pump fails.

### Engineering Solutions of AxEMU

The white outer shell of the AxEMU spacesuit is responsible for mechanical protection and maintaining vital pressure. The updated design addresses critical vacuum challenges thanks to several key solutions:

    - **Airtight Pressurization:** Stable artificial pressure, safe for life support, is maintained inside the suit.

    - **Protection from Radiation and Dust:** The outer layer effectively reflects solar radiation and protects joints from microscopic lunar dust, which can damage lungs if it enters the spacecraft.

    - **Oxygen Flow:** The ventilation system constantly supplies fresh oxygen directly to the astronaut's face, preventing suffocation from the accumulation of their own carbon dioxide. Exhaust gas is washed out into the pack's purification filters.

### Versatility and Autonomy

Unlike the individual spacesuits of the Apollo era, which were tailored strictly to the parameters of a specific person, the AxEMU model is designed as an adjustable platform. The design fits 99% of male and female body types, which significantly simplifies logistics and mission preparation.

The helmet has received an improved protective visor coating for better visibility under specific lunar light conditions, while the gloves are equipped with new movable joints to increase maneuverability. The autonomy of the complex is calculated for continuous work in open space for more than eight hours.

### The Path to Artemis IV

The first tests of the spacesuit in low Earth orbit conditions are planned as part of the Artemis III mission. This will be the final check before the main event — the Artemis IV mission, which is set to be the first landing of humans on the lunar surface since 1972.

Astronauts will spend about a week in the area of the Moon's south pole, where extreme cold reigns. Developers note that the insulation layers of the AxEMU are capable of reliably withstanding the lowest temperatures of shadowed craters for at least two hours of autonomous operation, ensuring the safety of researchers in the harshest conditions of the Solar System.
