Ukraine's top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, kicked off her grass-court season with a triumphant victory. At the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin, the Ukrainian confidently overcame her opponent's resistance in the first round, achieving a crushing success over Russian Anna Kalinskaya, who is competing under a neutral flag.

The match, which was supposed to be a test for both athletes, turned into a demonstration of Svitolina's total dominance. The game lasted only 43 minutes, after which Kalinskaya was forced to end the match prematurely, withdrawing from the tournament due to poor health.

### Revenge for the defeat in Doha

For Svitolina, this duel had special significance. Receiving the 6th seed at the tournament, the Ukrainian stepped onto the court with high motivation, eager to take revenge for her only loss to Kalinskaya. That battle took place in February 2026 at the "1000" category tournament in Doha, where Svitolina lost in the round of 16. In Berlin, history could not repeat itself: Elina fulfilled 100% of her intentions.

### Match progression: statistics of undisputed leadership

Events on the court unfolded rapidly. In the first set, Svitolina started powerfully, immediately winning three games in a row. The opponent tried to resist but managed to take only one game. The Ukrainian instantly brought the game to a logical conclusion — 6:1.

The second set developed according to a similar scenario. Svitolina again took a 3:0 lead. After that, the opponents exchanged games on their serves, and the score became 4:1. It was at this moment that Kalinskaya, whose game left much to be desired, requested a medical timeout.

Match statistics recorded the complete fiasco of Svitolina's opponent:

- Kalinskaya's first-serve success rate was a catastrophic 47%.

- The Russian committed two double faults.

- Svitolina converted 5 break points and hit 4 aces.

- In terms of the number of points won, the Ukrainian outperformed her opponent almost twice — 43 to 22.

After consulting with the doctor, Anna Kalinskaya officially refused to continue the match.

### The only Ukrainian in the draw and the next opponent

Thanks to this crushing victory, Svitolina remained the only representative of Ukraine in the main draw of the tournament in Berlin. Angelina Kalinina could not get through the qualification.

In the second round, in the quarterfinals, Elina is set to face Eva Lys (80th in the world), a German of Ukrainian origin. Lys is competing at the tournament by invitation (wild card). The tennis players have crossed paths very recently: in April 2026, Svitolina confidently beat Lys in the quarterfinals of the clay court tournament in Stuttgart.
