# Tarasyuk: Russia threatens NATO, while we argue about the past — it's time to stop

Amidst the growing military threat from Russia and real forecasts of a possible invasion of NATO countries, bilateral relations between Ukraine and Poland should not be destroyed due to historical disagreements. This was stated by diplomat, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Boris Tarasyuk, in an interview with RBK-Ukraine.

According to the politician, modern analytical data increasingly indicates that between 2027 and 2029, Russia may launch a large-scale aggression against one or several states of the North Atlantic Alliance. Against the backdrop of such a global danger, Tarasyuk considers attempts by Polish politicians to speculate on historical issues unacceptable.

### History repeats itself

The diplomat recalled the events of 2016, when the Polish Sejm adopted a resolution equating the Volhynian tragedy with genocide. Tarasyuk called this assessment absolutely unfair and, at that time, as chairman of the committee on parliamentary relations with Poland, resigned his powers in protest.

Today, in his opinion, history is repeating itself: anti-Ukrainian slogans are again being used in the domestic politics of neighbors. Tarasyuk called on the elites of both states to realize their historical responsibility.

"Politicians on both sides must stop blaming each other and focus on geopolitical challenges. And these challenges are Russian aggression and the danger that it may spread beyond the borders of Ukraine," the diplomat emphasized.

### Diplomatic crisis and awards

Tensions in relations reached a peak in May, when by the decision of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received the honorary name "named after the Heroes of the UPA". This decision caused an outburst of indignation in Poland.

In response, the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, decided to take back the Order of the White Eagle from Zelenskyy. In Ukraine, a wave of refusals of Polish awards followed: former presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko returned their orders. Zelenskyy himself also sent his order to Poland via "Nova Poshta".

Nevertheless, the dialogue continues. Recently, at the NATO summit in Ankara, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Karol Nawrocki met for the first time after the scandal. While the details of this meeting are not disclosed, the fact of the meeting itself indicates an attempt to smooth out sharp corners at a critical moment.
