# The Battle for Logistics: How American Autonomous All-Terrain Vehicles Are Changing the Rules of Engagement on the Frontline

Modern warfare in Ukraine has transformed into a conflict dominated by reconnaissance and FPV drones. This has created massive "no-go zones" on the battlefield, where any movement of personnel or conventional equipment becomes a lethal risk. In response to this threat, Ukrainian strategists have turned to ground autonomy, with American unmanned all-terrain vehicles, the Forterra Lancer, playing a key role in this process.

### Secret Deliveries and Frontline Reality

The American company Forterra, specializing in autonomous systems, has revealed data on the delivery of over 100 of its vehicles to Ukraine in the last nine months. These all-terrain vehicles, based on commercial Polaris ATVs, have become a vital element of logistics in conditions where traditional methods of ammunition resupply and casualty evacuation have become practically impossible.

Unlike most domestic developments that run on batteries and have a payload capacity of up to 250 kg, the American Lancers are equipped with gasoline engines and can transport up to 750 kg of cargo. This is a critically important advantage, allowing for the delivery of significant supplies to the rear and the front lines while minimizing risks to personnel.

### From Skepticism to Integration: Adapting to Real Conditions

Initially, Ukrainian military personnel approached the new equipment with caution. Forterra's base software was optimized for US Army standards, which proved too "refined" for the chaos of modern warfare. However, direct adaptation in the field changed the situation. The integration of Starlink satellite internet antennas turned the all-terrain vehicles into highly efficient tools capable of operating under conditions of intense electronic warfare.

However, the reality of combat quickly revealed the limits of modern autonomy. Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces primarily control the all-terrain vehicles remotely using teleoperation. While autopilot algorithms can navigate complex terrain, they cannot yet independently identify threats, react to the sudden appearance of enemy infantry, or handle ambushes in real-time.

### Losses and Lessons: Why Autonomy Is Not Yet Perfect

Despite successes, several units of equipment have been lost. Vehicles got stuck in the mud, becoming easy targets for enemy artillery. These losses served as a grim reminder that even advanced technologies cannot fully replace the human factor in unpredictable combat conditions.

For Forterra, which has attracted over $500 million in venture capital, the experience in Ukraine has become an invaluable source of data. The company's engineers are now working on combining classic automotive autopilots with the latest generative AI. The goal is to create systems capable of making generalized decisions independently in unpredictable situations, such as crossing minefields or interacting with armed systems, where open-source civilian AI is powerless.

### The Main Challenge: Cost and Scalability

The main obstacle to the mass adoption of these machines remains their high cost. Despite using commercial Polaris chains, Forterra's expensive sensor stacks do not allow for the equipment to be expended as freely as drones. Ukrainian defenders have set a clear task for American developers: radically reduce the cost of the platforms.

Reducing production costs and increasing algorithm autonomy will be the key to scaling deliveries. This will not only improve logistics but also save the lives of hundreds of military logisticians who currently risk their lives delivering cargo to "no-go zones".
