# The Cost of Security: Romania Spent 1.5 Million Euros to Shoot Down Three Drones in Three Days

Romania's airspace has become the scene of intense conflict in recent days. Within just 72 hours, the country's Air Force shot down three unmanned aerial vehicles that violated its border. This series of incidents, occurring between July 24 and 26, resulted in colossal financial costs and sparked serious diplomatic repercussions.

### The Economics of War in the Sky

To intercept aerial threats, Bucharest deployed F-16 fighters armed with AIM-9X air-to-air missiles. The cost of a single such missile is approximately $400,000. To destroy the three drones, three missiles were fired, amounting to $1.2 million in direct expenses.

However, this is only part of the picture. To the cost of ammunition, expenses for flight hours, aircraft maintenance, and crew operations were added. As a result, the total price of the three operations is estimated at approximately 1.5 million euros.

### Rising Number of Violations

The situation in the border zone remains tense. Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 100 Russian attacks have been recorded near the Romanian border. In 33 cases, Russian drones violated the country's airspace, each time prompting fighters to scramble for interception.

These incursions are confirmed by findings on the ground: debris from unmanned vehicles has been discovered on Romanian territory in approximately 50 cases. The latest in this series was the incident on July 26, when a Romanian F-16 shot down the third drone in three days. The country's prosecution has already confirmed that the first drone shot down on July 24 was a Russian 'Shahed' attack drone.

### NATO Response and Diplomacy

The border violations triggered not only a military but also a political response. During one of the incidents, four fighters were scrambled: two Romanian F-16s and two Italian Eurofighters, acting as part of a NATO mission.

Following the shooting down of the third drone, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador for an explanation. While the protection of the population remains an unconditional priority for the country, concerns are being voiced in military circles. The Romanian army acknowledges that it cannot sustain such costs in the long term if drones continue to penetrate the country's airspace at the same frequency.
