Messenger WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced a major update that will change the way three billion users around the world communicate. The company has launched a feature for unique usernames. This innovation will allow users to chat without having to reveal their personal phone number.

### Early Reservation and Global Launch

Although the full feature for hiding numbers will be operational in a few months, WhatsApp is already opening the possibility for early username reservations this week. The company's strategy is simple: give the huge audience time to choose their desired options before the official launch. The system is being rolled out globally, and users will receive an official notification in the app as soon as the feature becomes available in their region.

### How to Claim a Name

The process of choosing a name has become flexible and convenient. Users can come up with a unique username themselves or use the built-in generator, which will suggest suitable options. For small businesses, organizations, and content creators, a simplified procedure is provided: WhatsApp will allow the automatic import and reservation of the same names they already use on Facebook or Instagram.

After the full launch of the feature, the messenger's logic will change. When sending the first message, the sender's phone number will no longer be displayed to the recipient. To contact you, a new contact will need to know your exact username.

### Spam Protection and Secret Keys

Developers understand the risks associated with open access via usernames and have implemented a special anti-spam mechanism — a secret key. Its activation is optional, but it will prevent messages from being sent without knowing this code.

At the current reservation stage, a four-digit number can be set as the key. Later, when the feature is fully operational, the protection will be updated to a more complex code consisting of a combination of numbers and letters.

### Competition with Signal

Analysts note that in this way, WhatsApp is replicating the experience of the Signal messenger, which is focused on enhanced security and completely hid its users' phone numbers back in 2024. Implementing this feature puts WhatsApp on par with services that prioritize privacy, while maintaining a familiar interface for the mass user.
