# The First Dinosaur of Antarctica: How a Forgotten Bone Rewrote the History of Titanosaur Migration

In the history of paleontology, an event has been recorded that changes our understanding of the distribution of ancient giants. Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Natural History Museum in London have officially confirmed the identification of a unique fossil found in Antarctica. This is the first case in the history of science of discovering dinosaur remains on the territory of this continent.

### An Error That Became the Discovery of the Century

The story of the find began with a classic classification error. Geologist Mike Thomson discovered a mysterious bone while mapping rock layers on James Ross Island, located in the southeastern part of the Antarctic Peninsula. At that moment, the expedition was focused on finding remains of marine animals to date the rock formations. As a result, the find was automatically recorded as part of a marine reptile skeleton, packed, and sent to storage, where it lay unnoticed.

The situation changed drastically when paleontologist Mark Evans noticed the atypical shape of the vertebra. Suspicion of an error led to a detailed comparative analysis of the bone's geometry with known dinosaur skeleton specimens. The results of the study, published in the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, confirmed: the scientists were looking at a vertebra of a sauropod from the group of titanosaurs — the greatest land creatures to have ever walked the Earth.

### A Dwarf Giant in the Icy Hellscape

Although the fossil is incomplete, the analysis allowed scientists to estimate the size of its owner. This particular specimen was relatively small for its species — about 6 meters in length. At present, the question remains open whether this was a young individual or an adult representative of a dwarf species that had adapted to specific conditions.

Today, Antarctica is associated with extreme cold and powerful ice sheets, which make the search for fossils extremely difficult. However, 70 million years ago, the continent looked different: a warm climate without ice reigned there, and the land was covered by dense subtropical rainforests, providing food for various giants.

### Solving the Migration Route Puzzle

The find is of fundamental importance for understanding the logistics of the dispersal of long-necked lizards. Previously, remains of titanosaurs were found in South America and New Zealand, but their absence in Australia created a serious evolutionary mystery. How could dinosaurs get to New Zealand, bypassing the Australian continent?

The answer lies in the movement of continents. Millions of years ago, the ancient continent of Zealandia and the southern tip of South America were geographically close to the Antarctic Peninsula. Confirmation of the presence of titanosaurs in Antarctica proves that these herbivorous giants migrated from South America to New Zealand directly through Antarctica, completely bypassing Australia. This find closes a gap in the paleontological map of the world, turning Antarctica from an isolated ice mass into a key link in ancient migration routes.
