# The Hague to Host Trial of the Kremlin: Netherlands Establishes Special Tribunal for Aggression Against Ukraine

The political and legal landscape surrounding the conflict in Ukraine has undergone fundamental changes. The Netherlands has officially confirmed its decision to host the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression on its territory. This decision, announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, paves the way for holding the highest political and military leadership of Russia accountable specifically for initiating the war, rather than just for its consequences.

### Historic Decision in The Hague

Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Dutch government for this step in his Telegram channel, calling it historic. A key moment was the substantive conversation between the Ukrainian leader and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rob Jetten. The result of the dialogue was the official confirmation that the tribunal will be based in The Hague.

Earlier, on May 15, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe approved the key decision regarding the procedure for launching this mechanism. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha confirmed that Kyiv has received all necessary official guarantees for the court's placement in the Netherlands. This event will be an important stage in the process of retribution for war crimes and genocide.

### Funding and Launch of the Mechanism

Funds have already been allocated to implement the ambitious plan to create this new judicial body. In January 2026, the European Union allocated the first 10 million euros for the creation of the special tribunal. These funds will be directed towards the prosecution of Russian leaders responsible for the war against Ukraine.

### The Cost of Aggression and Air Defense Support

Against the backdrop of legal victories, the reality on the ground remains harsh. During the meeting with Rob Jetten, Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed his partner about the consequences of the latest Russian strikes. The President reported on the completion of the debris clearance in Kyiv following the attack that occurred on the night of Thursday.

A single terrorist strike alone claimed the lives of 30 people. Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to all the relatives and loved ones of the deceased. In the context of these tragic events, the President emphasized the importance of allies' support in protecting the lives of Ukrainians.

One of the key topics of cooperation with the Netherlands was the air defense system (ADS). The sides agreed on the schedule for future meetings, continuing to strengthen Ukraine's defensive potential. Zelenskyy thanked the Netherlands for their solidarity and support during this difficult period.
