# The Illusion of Defense: The Real State of Poland's 'Eastern Shield' Program

Poland's 'Eastern Shield' program, designed to strengthen the country's eastern borders, covers 61 km of the border with Russia and Belarus. However, in the last six months, builders have laid only one kilometer of new fortifications. This casts doubt on the speed of implementing large-scale defensive plans.

### The Gap Between Reports and Reality

Although official reports speak of 61 km of defensive lines, there are few genuine linear fortifications on this list — their length is only 10 km. Most of the completed section is not walls or barriers, but material preparation. The military is counting on these reserves in the event of a sudden crisis: concrete hedgehogs and coils of barbed wire are stored in warehouses, which will allow the border to be blocked promptly.

### Budget and Future Plans

No one intends to stop the project. In 2026, the Polish Ministry of National Defense plans to spend about 150 million euros on the 'Eastern Shield'. The money will go towards expanding the linear part and new logistics hubs. Polish authorities want to cover another 207 km of the state border. In total, the 'Eastern Shield' is supposed to protect almost 700 km of the border strip. About 500 km are planned to be fortified with various types of fortifications, while the remaining territories will be protected by natural obstacles — rivers, swamps, and forests.

### First Results and Civil Mobilization

The first section, 2.3 km long, was handed over by the military back in February 2025. It was placed on strategic crossings, and the exact location is kept secret. Earlier, it was reported that as part of the 'Eastern Shield' program, Poland is accelerating the military training of the population. More than 20,000 people have signed up for voluntary exercises, which became a record figure.

### Regional Context

It has also become known that Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have announced their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines due to the military threat from Russia. This decision underscores the seriousness of the intentions of the Baltic states and Poland regarding the strengthening of their borders.
