# Three days missing: tragedy in Sichavka and the cost of vacationing on a 'wild' beach

For the third day in a row, rescuers have not stopped searching for a 10-year-old girl who went missing in the sea near the village of Sichavka, Odessa region. The incident occurred at an unregulated beach where the child was relaxing with her great-grandmother. A sudden gust of wind caught the child's inflatable ring and swiftly carried her out into the open sea.

### Scale of the search operation

The situation requires the deployment of significant resources. According to the State Emergency Service (SES) in the Odessa region, rescuers have already inspected 6 kilometers of the coastline. The search zone includes 210 hectares of water surface and 4.5 hectares of the seabed. Divers, drone specialists, and psychological support teams for relatives have been mobilized for the operation.

### Dangers of unregulated beaches

This case serves as yet another reminder of the risks associated with swimming in unregulated areas. The authorities emphasized that even a visually 'cozy' spot can instantly become the cause of a tragedy. The lack of lifeguard posts, unverified seabed conditions, and unpredictable weather create a huge threat to life. The use of inflatable flotation devices in such zones multiplies the risk.

### Official beaches and safety control

Currently, the village of Sichavka is not included in the list of official beach zones in the Odessa region for the 2026 season. In the region, only 13 beaches have officially opened, having passed safety inspections and been equipped with necessary lifeguard posts and shelters. The Ministry of Health publishes weekly results of water quality checks in these areas. Notably, there are no officially registered river beaches in the region at all.
