# Tropical May in Europe: How Anomalies in Heat and Storms in Australia Are Reshaping the Global Climate Map

May, traditionally symbolizing the onset of spring and mild weather, has this year become a test of endurance for meteorologists and residents across an entire continent. Europe is facing an unprecedented heatwave that has not only raised mercury levels but also shattered temperature records set in the last century. While people on the western side of the planet seek refuge from the scorching sun, on the other end of the globe, in Australia, nature is demonstrating its destructive fury through tornadoes and torrential rains.

### London and Paris: Summer in the Midst of Spring

The United Kingdom, known for its changeable weather, has witnessed a shocking event. On Tuesday, thermometers in Kew Gardens in London reached 35.1°C. This is not just a high temperature for May; it is an absolute record, surpassing the achievement of 1922. Notably, the British did not even have time to celebrate Monday's record (34.8°C) before it was instantly surpassed. The heat was so intense that even the nights offered no relief: in Camborne, temperatures did not drop below 21.4°C, creating a "tropical night" effect.

Ireland, usually famous for its coolness and fog, was also not spared. Weather stations in Killarney and Clonmel recorded 28.8°C — the maximum for this month in the entire history of observations. The situation is critical in France as well, where temperatures reached 36°C. According to official data, this anomaly has already claimed seven lives, making the situation not just meteorological but a humanitarian issue.

### Australia: A Climatic Contrast

While Europe languishes in the heat, Australia is battling the opposite element. The southeast of the continent is engulfed in storms, which the Bureau of Meteorology classifies as life-threatening. In the state of Queensland, torrential rains have been recorded, dumping 50 mm of precipitation in just half an hour, which threatens flash floods. In New South Wales, wind gusts reached 104 km/h, and forecasts promise up to 100 mm of precipitation in some local areas. This is a vivid example of how climatic shifts manifest in different corners of the planet simultaneously, but with different "weather policies".

### Global Trend: Why Has May Become So Hot?

Experts note that current temperatures in Europe exceed average indicators for this time of year by 10–15 degrees. Forecasts promise the anomaly will persist until the end of the week, after which only a slight cooling is expected in the UK. Similar scenarios are being observed in Ukraine, where the beginning of May was also marked by the updating of temperature maximums in six cities at once. The world's climate map is being redrawn before our eyes, and May's records are just one of the warning signals.
