# Trump and Iran: Peace Treaty or Cunning Pause in the War? Agreement Details

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, made a loud statement on his birthday, announcing an agreement with Iran. Tehran confirmed this news, however, experts warn: the chances of lasting peace in the Middle East remain extremely low. What lies behind this "gift" to Trump and why might peace be only temporary?

### Agreement Details: What are the parties signing?

The official signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19. However, a full-fledged peace treaty will not be signed, but rather a preliminary memorandum on a ceasefire for a period of 60 days. According to data received from the mediator — Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — the parties have agreed to an immediate and final cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Key points of the memorandum include:

    - **Lifting blockades:** Iran undertakes to unblock shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, while the US will lift its naval blockade of Iran.

    - **Financial issue:** According to the Iranian Fars News Agency, the memorandum provides for the unblocking of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

    - **Control of the strait:** Iran will retain certain control over the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime services will be managed jointly by Iran and Oman.

### The main problem is postponed

Despite optimistic statements, there are currently no confirmed details of the arrangements from Washington. Moreover, the memorandum does not resolve the main cause of the conflict — Iran's nuclear program. It was this that became the reason for the attacks by Israel and the US earlier this year, aimed at destroying Tehran's potential to create nuclear weapons.

The US and Iran must work out a solution regarding the nuclear program later, after the conclusion of the current memorandum. This allows Iran to postpone the most painful issue to the second stage of negotiations.

### Why did Iran make concessions?

Over the last two months, Tehran has actively dragged out negotiations, understanding that time is on its side. Iran gained a powerful lever of pressure on the US and its allies — the ability to block the Strait of Hormuz, which directly affected the global economy and Trump's ratings. However, American patience snapped: last week the US resumed attacks on targets in Iran.

Tehran realized that the price of further delay could exceed the benefit of the blockade. Intense strikes and the threat of a new full-scale war with Israel forced the new radical leadership of Iran to fix an intermediate result against the backdrop of critical exhaustion of its own forces.

### Strategic pause for Tehran

As the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes, the 60-day ceasefire could become a strategic pause for Iran. This time will allow them to regroup and conduct the next rounds of negotiations from a more advantageous position. Iran managed to negotiate a maximally beneficial structure: immediate lifting of the blockade and access to assets as an advance, while postponing the decision on the nuclear program.

Thus, although Trump announced a "victory" and the "end of the war," the future of the Middle East remains uncertain. Further negotiations are far from guaranteed to succeed, given that the nuclear program remains the cornerstone of Iran's national security.
