The situation with anti-Russian restrictions in the energy sector may change radically in the near future. US President Donald Trump stated that Washington is ready to resume oil sanctions against Russia, as the global situation with raw material supplies is stabilizing.

### Reason for tightening the regime

The words of the American leader, published by The Guardian, were a response to a question about the possibility of increasing pressure on Moscow. Trump explained the logic of his decision based on the current state of affairs in the market.

"Well, soon we will be able to do this, because right now oil is being supplied. We lifted the sanctions because, obviously, we do not want to hinder oil supplies. So soon... at some point we will be in a position to do this," noted the US President.

### History of temporary relaxations

The decision to temporarily lift some restrictions was made by Washington back in March. At that time, the US allowed the export of already loaded Russian oil and oil products. The official justification for the move was linked to the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East.

Washington pointed to the war against Iran, which resulted in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This led to serious difficulties with energy supplies from the region, causing a sharp spike in prices for "black gold." To avoid shortages, American authorities went for temporary concessions.

Initially, exemptions from the sanctions regime were supposed to last only 30 days. However, at the request of several partner countries, American authorities repeatedly extended this period.

### Economic consequences and Kyiv's reaction

The return of sanctions will be a serious blow to the Russian economy. The country's budget, including the financing of military expenditures, critically depends on revenue from oil sales.

Preliminary relaxations, which were in effect over the last few months, have already sparked sharp criticism of the US administration. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that Russia does not deserve a relaxation of restrictions, given the regular strikes on civilian objects in Ukraine.
