# Trump demands payment for Strait of Hormuz protection: US will no longer work for free

Donald Trump, President of the United States, made a bold statement regarding Washington's new policy towards the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the United States will take control of this strategically vital waterway, but other countries will now have to pay for their services.

"We will control the strait, and we will probably manage it. We will become the guardians of the strait. You might call us the guardian angels of the strait," Trump stated during a speech broadcast by RBC-Ukraine citing Clash Report.

### The end of the era of free protection

The American leader emphasized that Washington no longer intends to bear the costs of ensuring security in the region on its own. "Other countries are very wealthy and they are on our side. You cannot expect us to do this for free, unlike how it was for many years," Trump noted. He reminded that the US has been guarding the Strait of Hormuz for half a century, but has never received financial compensation for it.

According to the President, the situation will now change: "We will guard the strait and receive a lot of money for it." Trump also added that he wants to reimburse the costs associated with the risks to the lives of American military personnel forced to operate in dangerous conditions.

### Escalation of the conflict with Iran

In his speech, Trump also touched upon the tense relations with Iran. He stated that the US had destroyed most of the Iranian weaponry and air defense systems, and also pointed out that Tehran had repeatedly violated agreements with Washington. "They always violate them. We made 10 agreements with these people. So we will just strike them very hard," the American leader emphasized.

Recall that on the night of July 12, Iran announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz following an incident where Iranian forces attacked a container ship attempting to pass through an unauthorized route. In response, the US launched strikes on Iranian targets. Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the strait remains open for shipping.

### Preparation for a prolonged confrontation

According to Axios, the White House is preparing for a prolonged confrontation with Iran. The American administration is considering a scenario of a multi-day or even multi-week exchange of strikes due to the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. This could lead to serious consequences for the global economy, considering that a significant portion of the world's oil supplies passes through the strait.

Thus, Trump's statement about the need to pay for the protection of the Strait of Hormuz has become part of a broader US strategy to revise its role in the region and increase pressure on Iran. We can only wait to see how other countries will react and what steps Tehran will take in response to these statements.
