# Trump Imposes 20% Tariff on the Strait of Hormuz: US Restores Blockade of Iran

![Donald Trump signs an executive order imposing a 20% tariff on the Strait of Hormuz, reinstating the blockade on Iran](https://xab.info/media/2026/07/13/tramp-vvodit-20-poshlinu-na-ormuzskiy-proliv-ssha-vosstanavlivayut-blokadu-irana/tramp-vvodit-20-poshlinu-na-ormuzskiy-proliv-ssha-vosstanavlivayut-blokadu-irana-1.webp)

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced the restoration of the blockade of Iranian ports and the imposition of control over the Strait of Hormuz. According to his statement, the US will now levy a 20% tariff on all vessels passing through this strategically vital waterway. This decision is aimed at covering the costs associated with ensuring security in the region.

### Restoration of the Blockade of Iranian Ports

"The Strait of Hormuz is open and will remain open — with or without Iran," Trump wrote. He emphasized that the new blockade applies exclusively to Iranian vessels and their clients, who are prohibited from entering or leaving the strait. Previously, on June 18, by Trump's order, the naval blockade of Iranian ports was fully lifted.

### New US Status: "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz"

Trump stated that the US will now be referred to as the "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz." In this capacity, the American side will collect 20% of the value of all transported cargo to offset the costs of ensuring security. "This is fair, given the instability of the region," the President noted.

### Conflict over the Strait: Events of the Last Few Weeks

The situation around the Strait of Hormuz escalated following an incident on the night of July 12, when Iran announced the complete closure of the strait. Tehran stated that the decision was made after several vessels attempted to pass along a route not coordinated with Iranian authorities. During the incident, Iranian military forces attacked a container ship, forcing it to stop. In response, the US launched strikes on Iranian targets.

### CENTCOM Position and Conflict Prospects

Despite the tension, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for international shipping. However, according to Axios, the White House is preparing for a prolonged confrontation with Iran. The administration is considering a scenario where an exchange of strikes due to the situation around the strait could last several days or even weeks.

Thus, US actions are aimed not only at restoring control over a key maritime route but also at demonstrating strength in the region, where Washington's interests clash with Tehran's ambitions.
