# Trump Shifts Focus to Ukraine: Europe Fears Losing Control Over the Peace Process

Behind the scenes at the G7 summit in Évian, a tense diplomatic struggle has unfolded. European officials have expressed serious concern: having concluded work on the Iranian crisis, US President Donald Trump intends to take the initiative in resolving the conflict in Ukraine into his own hands. EU diplomats fear that Washington's active intervention could undermine their strategy of maximum pressure on Moscow.

### Fear of a "Unilateral" Peace

According to RBC-Ukraine, citing Politico, behind closed doors at the summit, European diplomats admit that Trump's preoccupation with the Iranian issue was not necessarily bad for their plans. Now, however, with the US President's attention shifting, Brussels sees a threat that Trump might push allies aside and impose terms unacceptable to Kyiv and Europe.

Arriving in Évian the day after his birthday, Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron. During the conversation, the American leader stated that he is now ready to focus on Ukraine. "Now that this is done, we will focus on this and see if we can do it," Trump is quoted as saying, referring to the resolution of the Iranian crisis. He also emphasized the scale of the tragedy: "Twenty-five thousand people die every month, mostly soldiers. This should not be happening".

### Phone Calls and the Kremlin's Position

Trump reported that he had held phone conversations the previous day with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In the American leader's opinion, both sides are "open" to negotiations. However, the format of these talks is causing disagreement.

Macron insists that Europe must be present at the negotiating table not as a mediator, but as an equal party. "The right kind of negotiations is one where Ukraine and Russia sit at the table, while Europeans and Americans sit nearby," the French leader stated in an interview with TF1.

### Financial Support and Kyiv's Strategy

While the US seeks a path to peace, the European Union continues to ramp up support for Kyiv. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is already covering two-thirds of Ukraine's financial needs — 90 billion euros for the current and next year. The rest, she said, is expected from other partners.

Under the SAFE program, it was announced that 75 million euros in grants would be allocated to Ukraine and 15 billion euros in credit to France for the development of the defense industry. On the same day, EU ministers agreed to officially begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

Kyiv and Brussels are striving to draw the US into a common negotiating position, but without any territorial concessions. Zelenskyy also insists that Europe must be an ally, not a mediator. Earlier, the Ukrainian leader said that together with Trump, they discussed the possibility of a meeting with Putin in the US in a format that would be harder for the Russian leader to refuse. If Russia rejects this option as well, Kyiv expects further intensification of pressure.
