The G7 summit in France began with anxious expectations but ended with an unexpected diplomatic shift. US President Donald Trump demonstrated a willingness to increase pressure on the Kremlin to end the war in Ukraine, but this support comes at a price. During negotiations, the American leader proposed a sort of geopolitical exchange to European allies: assistance on the Ukrainian issue in return for joint actions to stabilize the situation with Iran.

### Change in Rhetoric and New Course

G7 leaders arrived in Évian-les-Bains fearing conflicts with Trump over Iran and Ukraine. However, by the end of the first day of negotiations, the mood in diplomatic circles had changed. The White House's position softened, and Trump directly hinted at supporting Europe on the Ukrainian issue. In return, he demanded partner assistance in ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz and support for a new Iranian agreement.

"The discussions we held among ourselves and with the US President — both at official meetings and during informal talks in the corridors — give me a certain optimism," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told journalists.

### Sanctions and Phone Calls

Following a 70-minute meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump announced the resumption of sanctions against the Russian oil sector. "Russia must reach an agreement," the American leader emphasized. These actions allayed allies' fears that Trump might force Ukraine to capitulate. Earlier, his one-hour phone call with Vladimir Putin had caused panic among partners, who feared unilateral concessions to the Kremlin.

### European Conditions

European countries are ready to help the US in the Strait of Hormuz but are putting forward their own conditions. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the deployment of ships for demining must be a joint decision by all parties to the agreement, including Iran and Oman. "He (Trump) will need the capabilities of his G7 allies and other countries... to demine the Hormuz Strait," explained one senior official.

### "Soft Power" Diplomacy

EU leaders applied a "soft power" strategy, playing on Trump's love for luxury. Macron invited the American president to dinner at the Palace of Versailles, which left an indelible impression on him. "I was heading out after lunch, and then the French President, who turned out to be a very nice person, invited me to dinner at Versailles. And Versailles is a real find," Trump recounted.

The Ukrainian delegation continues active contacts with the American side. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that on June 17, he could hold another meeting with Trump, and negotiations between the delegations would last for a day. These efforts are aimed at solidifying US support ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara.
