# Tusk before the NATO summit: Poland is not ready to take on new financial commitments for Ukraine

In the run-up to the NATO summit, which will take place in Ankara on July 7–8, Warsaw has outlined a new position on issues of financial support for Ukraine. The head of the Polish government, Donald Tusk, directly instructed the country's delegation to refrain from statements implying the assumption of new debt obligations towards Kyiv.

### Priority of defense spending

The Prime Minister's main argument is that Poland is already bearing a colossal burden by ensuring the security of the eastern border of the European Union. Tusk emphasized that when discussing new initiatives, in particular the creation of a 40 billion euro military support fund for Ukraine, the country's current spending on its own defense must be taken into account.

"This is not because I believe that Ukraine does not need financial support. I believe that Poland has very significant obligations along the entire eastern border of the EU, and everyone must take this into account," Tusk stated at a press conference.

### Warsaw's Strategy

The position of the Polish leadership does not mean a refusal to help Kyiv, but dictates the need for a cautious approach to new financial injections. Warsaw believes that it is currently bearing the main burden of protecting the alliance's eastern borders from external threats, and this factor must be taken into account by allies.

Earlier, Kyiv warned of a possible information campaign by Russian special services related to historical events in Volhynia. According to Ukrainian sources, the goal of these actions is to increase tension in relations between the two countries, however, Tusk's position looks like a pragmatic response to current economic and military realities.
