# Project Nightfall: UK Launches Development of Its Own Ballistic Missile for Ukraine

The United Kingdom has taken a decisive step in developing its own defense industry by signing contracts for the development of the first ballistic missile in 50 years. The new program, codenamed Nightfall, aims not only to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities but also to reduce European countries' dependence on American weaponry.

### Accelerated Timeline and Simplified Requirements

According to sources, the UK Ministry of Defense has decided to simplify the technical requirements for the new weapon. The main goal is to accelerate the development process and ensure the delivery of missiles to Ukraine by 2027. Under normal circumstances, the creation and deployment of ballistic missiles take more than a decade; however, under the Nightfall project, the timelines have been compressed to a minimum.

Test launches are expected to begin within the next 12 months. Although preliminary contracts were planned to be signed by March, their conclusion was delayed by approximately two months. The developer companies must successfully pass testing stages before receiving orders for full-scale production.

### Strategy for Independence from the US

A key factor influencing the launch of the program was the British government's concern over excessive dependence on the US defense industry. The new missiles will be fully independent: they will not contain American components and will not use American data. This will ensure Europe's operational freedom of action in conditions where support from Washington may become less predictable.

The program pursues two strategic goals: to provide Kyiv with resources to repel a full-scale invasion and to expand the continent's own defense capabilities.

### Characteristics and Cost of the New Weapon

Preliminary estimates suggest that the new missiles will differ from existing analogues, such as the MBDA-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles. The Nightfall ballistic missiles are expected to be less accurate and less powerful; however, their cost will be approximately half that of their counterparts.

Previously, the media reported on UK plans to create cheaper long-range missiles of its own production, capable of reaching the front within a year. Project Nightfall confirms this course towards creating affordable and independent weaponry to support Ukraine.
