# Ukraine's Car Fleet: Why Foreign Car Repairs Are Becoming Unaffordable and How Drivers Are Coping

A modern car is a complex technical organism requiring qualified maintenance. However, for many Ukrainian car owners, a visit to a professional service center has become a financial trial. High repair costs, waiting times for available mechanics, and the risk of poor-quality service force drivers to seek compromises — ranging from DIY repairs to choosing more affordable models.

### The Paradox of the Ukrainian Car Market

An interesting situation is observed in Ukraine: on one hand, there are many high-class vehicles on the roads, often purchased on the secondary market. On the other hand, a significant portion of the population lacks sufficient funds for their quality maintenance. As Alexander Cherevko, Head of the Service and Technical Support Division of Robert Bosch in Ukraine, notes, when buying a car, one must look not only at the amount of money "in hand" but also at their financial solvency in the long term.

Choosing a high-class car at a moderate price, one should understand that its maintenance will not be as affordable as the purchase price. As long as the car is running — everything is fine. But when it breaks down, the owner is often shocked by the bill presented at the service station.

### Why has service become so expensive?

The structure of service station tariffs has changed significantly in recent years due to the design features of modern cars. According to market participants, equipping a modern multi-brand service costs hundreds of thousands of euros, while a dealership service can cost over a million. These investments are factored into the cost of every labor hour.

Service for modern cars cannot be cheap. Designs today are complex, most systems are linked to electronic control units, meaning any intervention requires knowledge of electronics and corresponding equipment.

### Three main customer complaints about service stations

Order desk managers hear the same question several times a day: "Why is it so expensive?" But behind this lies a whole complex of problems:

  - **Speed.** At a good station, you may have to wait several days for an available mechanic. This is less relevant for big cities but is a harsh reality for regional centers and smaller towns.

  - **Quality of repair.** It is not uncommon for symptoms of the malfunction to remain or new ones to appear after a repair. This happens due to diagnostic errors or violations of the parts replacement technology.

  - **Price.** Either due to objective reasons or due to the excessive appetites of specific service providers.

### How to save on repairs?

The first recipe for reducing car maintenance costs is to purchase a model that requires less money for service and repair. It is encouraging that there is a segment of motorists in the country who, even with certain financial solvency, consciously use budget segment cars.

The point is to maintain them without straining the wallet. At the same time, equipping the car with high-class tires, branded spare parts, expensive oil... And maintaining such non-mandatory ("does not affect speed") options as air conditioning, safety systems, and exhaust neutralization.

Even if considering self-repair as the domain of desperate people and enthusiasts, you can save money — but only if you understand that cheap repairs can cost more in the long run.
