# Lost your license due to drunk driving or an accident? The Ukrainian MIA explains how to get it back

Drivers who have been deprived of the right to drive a vehicle due to driving under the influence or committing a traffic offense now face a new requirement: simply serving the penalty period is no longer enough. To regain their license, they must now retake the full driving exams.

RBC-Ukraine reports this, citing the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The department has clarified the procedure for restoring driving rights for those penalized under Articles 130 or 124 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses.

### Theory and Practice: Mandatory Requirements

The main condition for regaining a license is passing the exams. Drivers must undergo testing on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Only after confirming their ability to operate a vehicle and their knowledge of traffic rules will a citizen be able to legally get behind the wheel again.

It is important to note that geographical ties to the place of residence are no longer relevant. Drivers can apply at any MIA service center in any region of the country, regardless of where they are registered.

### Digitalization of the Process: Documents via "Diia"

The document submission procedure has been significantly simplified thanks to digital technologies. The MIA clarified that it is not necessary to carry paper copies of documents to take the exams. Citizens can verify their identity electronically through the state application "Diia".

The following types of identification are accepted in the system:

- Passport of a citizen of Ukraine;

- ID card;

- International passport;

- Certificate of internal displacement.

This allows drivers to file an application for retaking the exam more quickly, without wasting time gathering paper certificates.

### European Integration and New License Validity Periods

These changes come into effect against the backdrop of a general update to the rules for issuing driver's licenses in Ukraine. The Cabinet of Ministers has adjusted the regulatory framework to bring it closer to European standards.

According to the new rules, the validity period of the license will depend on the vehicle category:

- For motorcycle and passenger car drivers, licenses will be issued for a term of 15 years;

- For professional drivers of cargo and passenger transport, the validity period will be reduced to 5 years.

At the same time, the department assured that all previously issued licenses remain valid until their current expiration date. The transition to new standards is taking place smoothly, without the need for immediate document replacement.
