# Ukraine's Potato Market: Current Dumping and a Sharp Price Surge in Autumn Due to Abnormal Heat

The potato market in Ukraine is experiencing a period of turbulence. Currently, farmers are rushing to sell the early harvest, which has led to a temporary collapse in prices. However, experts warn that this situation could change dramatically in the coming months, and consumers should prepare for a significant increase in the cost of the product.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing data from Nikolai Furdyga, Director of the Institute of Potato Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAN). The expert analyzed the situation in three key regions where the crop is predominantly grown by the private sector on plots ranging from 1 to 10 hectares.

### Harvest Paradox: Why is there dumping now?

According to Furdyga, the early group of varieties, in particular 'Riviera', showed excellent results this year. The planting of these crops was significantly increased in the leading regions, which led to a sharp rise in market supply.

Farmers, eager to get their first earnings, are rushing to dig up the harvest. This creates a dumping effect: potatoes are being sold straight from the field for 6.5–7 hryvnias per kilogram. However, this cheap product is just the tip of the iceberg, hiding serious problems with the main harvests.

### Temperature Shock and Harvest Loss

The main reason for the future price increase lies in climatic anomalies. Most regions experienced an acute lack of moisture during the critical period of vegetation — during flowering and budding.

Specialists at the Institute of Potato Growing, where about 60 varieties are cultivated, conducted dynamic test digs and recorded a yield lag of 30% compared to last year. The culprit was temperature stress.

"When the temperature exceeded +37°C for more than 5 days in a row, the photosynthetic surface of the plants simply stopped working. The plant spent all its water not on accumulating the harvest, but on its own cooling and survival," explained Furdyga.

This six-day temperature shock led to a loss of approximately 7 tons per hectare. Notably, such figures were recorded even on fields with irrigation (drip or sprinkler). On dry land, where there is no artificial irrigation, losses will be even more significant.

### Forecast: Prices will inevitably rise

Due to the current lack of moisture, the tubers will no longer be able to gain the necessary mass. The expert predicts that by the end of October – early November, when mass digging begins and the market realizes the real shortfall, prices will go up.

According to the Director of the Institute of Potato Growing, the cost of the product will increase by approximately 30% when sold from the field and by 12–15% when sold from storage.

Nikolai Furdyga noted that the forecast does not include possible imports, which could have smoothed the situation, as happened in 2024. However, according to him, quality domestic potatoes will cost more in any case.
