# Ukraine's international reserves rise to $51.3 billion: how partner aid saved the currency market

As of July 1, Ukraine's international reserves reached $51.3 billion. This figure is the result of a sharp increase in June, when reserves grew by 12.2%. This surge was a response to the depletion of reserves recorded the previous month.

Data on reserve dynamics was confirmed by the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), as cited by RBC-Ukraine. The regulator explained that the key factor ensuring the restoration of reserves was the massive inflow of international financial assistance.

### The role of international support

In June, Ukraine received more than $15 billion from international partners. A significant portion of these funds was directed directly to replenish international reserves. It was precisely this capital inflow that allowed the compensation of NBU currency interventions and other mandatory payments in foreign currency, which traditionally place a strain on the currency market.

NBU experts emphasized that substantial volumes of external support played a dual role. First, they allowed for the financing of current state budget needs. Second, and equally importantly, a "safety cushion" was formed — a reserve of foreign currency funds to ensure the country's future expenditures.

### Currency market stability

Despite the state incurring significant expenses, the current level of reserves, according to the regulator's assessment, remains sufficient. This allows for the maintenance of currency market stability and guarantees the fulfillment of Ukraine's international obligations.

To understand the context, it is worth noting that in May the situation was different: international reserves decreased by 5.2% and dropped to $45.7 billion. At that time, the NBU explained the decline by stating that currency interventions and public debt payments exceeded the volume of inflows from external partners.

The dynamics of reserves have a longer history as well. At the beginning of 2026, currency reserves reached a historical peak of $57.7 billion. However, a decline subsequently began, driven by the unevenness of external financing inflows. The current growth in June demonstrates the system's ability to adapt to fluctuations in aid flows.
