# Autonomous 'Shahed' Killers: How Ukraine is Scaling Production of Interceptors with 95% Automation

Ukraine's defense industry has made a qualitative leap in the field of air defense. The country has begun scaling the production of a new generation of interceptors capable of autonomously destroying Russian 'Shahed' kamikaze drones. The key feature of the new technology is the automation of 95% of the entire interception process.

Information about the launch of mass production came from Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. According to him, the solution was developed with the participation of the state defense cluster Brave1, which allowed the cycle from prototype creation to combat deployment to be reduced to less than one year.

### How the Autonomous Interception System Works

The new technology radically changes the role of the operator in the air combat process. If previously the pilot had to manually keep the drone on course towards the enemy, now his task is reduced to monitoring and decision-making.

According to the process description, the operator sees the movement of targets in real-time, selects the priority threat, and gives the command to engage. After that, the system takes over: the drone independently flies to the target, recognizes it, and guides itself for the strike.

The effectiveness of the development was confirmed during successful combat tests in the Kharkiv region. The Defense Minister emphasized that autonomy is one of the key directions for the development of modern air defense, allowing for faster reaction to mass attacks and more effective protection of cities.

### Economic Feasibility and New Threats

Interceptor drones are viewed by Kyiv as the cheapest alternative to classic air defense systems. According to Reuters, such devices have already shot down about 1,500 enemy drones. The cost of using interceptors is several times lower than launching Western or Soviet missiles.

However, requirements for technology are constantly growing. A week ago, the companies 'General Cherehnya' and STRIX presented specialized interceptors for fighting jet modifications of 'Shaheds'. These targets develop speeds up to 600 km/h, making their interception with standard means significantly more difficult. In response to this threat, Ukrainian manufacturers are creating the latest models capable of dealing with high-speed targets.

### International Cooperation and Prospects

The development of the industry is not limited to internal capacities. In January 2026, Ukraine licensed the technology for producing the Octopus interceptor drone for the first time. The production of these devices was launched in the United Kingdom with potential volumes of several thousand units per month.

In Kyiv, they declare the intention to scale solutions that have already proven their effectiveness in real combat conditions, striving to ensure a reliable shield against air attacks.
