Over four years of full-scale war, Ukraine has undergone a radical transformation, becoming one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world. According to experts, this outcome may represent the greatest strategic failure for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, whose original goals included the “demilitarization” of the country.

### From People’s Battalions to NATO Standards

The story of modern Ukrainian military power began in 2014. At that time, the country was saved by a grassroots movement: volunteers formed battalions under open skies to halt the Russian invasion. While full territorial liberation was not achieved then, aggression was contained.

The next phase involved large-scale military reforms aligned with NATO standards. The armed forces grew to several hundred thousand soldiers, laying a solid foundation for building significantly more powerful military capabilities after February 2022.

### Tech Leap and Absence of Bureaucracy

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian military has undergone another deep transformation. New tactics, talented young commanders, and technological innovations were rapidly implemented, bypassing unnecessary bureaucracy. Today, Ukraine is a global leader in drone warfare.

Ukrainian companies have developed unmanned aerial vehicles that have proven highly effective on the battlefield. Notably, during joint exercises with NATO, Ukrainian units repeatedly outperformed their allies, prompting partners to reconsider their own combat doctrines.

### Ukraine as a Global Player

Perception of the country on the international stage has shifted. In spring 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered Gulf states assistance in countering Iranian drones. This compelled the world to view Ukraine not as a “burden” for security, but as a full-fledged player.

Now, NATO countries are lining up to learn from Ukrainian instructors. Joint production initiatives with Ukrainian defense firms are also being actively discussed.

### Strategic Failure and Loss Statistics

One of the main objectives of the February 2022 invasion, according to Vladimir Putin, was the “demilitarization” of Ukraine. However, the result turned out to be diametrically opposite: Russia now faces one of the most militarized nations in Europe on its border. Russian leadership is confronted with two scenarios — both unfavorable.

The scale of technology deployment is confirmed by numbers. Since the beginning of the year, Ukrainian drones have struck over 800,000 enemy targets. According to Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, drones currently account for more than 90% of all losses inflicted on occupiers.

### New Developments: From Maritime to Underwater Drones

Technological advancement continues unabated. Ukraine has developed a unique maritime drone designed to hunt Russian aircraft. Additionally, Ukrainian company Global Mark created the Sea Trident underwater unmanned vehicle. It can stealthily deliver payloads up to one ton to strike strategic targets and large Russian vessels.
