# Ukrainian passport: why having the document does not guarantee entry abroad and how to avoid refusal

For many Ukrainians, having a foreign passport seems like a sufficient condition for traveling abroad. However, practice shows that even with a document, travelers may face refusal to cross the border. The Migration Service of the Dnipropetrovsk region, citing which RBC-Ukraine reports, warns: before departure, it is necessary to carefully check not only the fact of having a passport, but also its validity period, as well as the physical condition of the document.

### The "six-month rule" and exceptions

One of the most common obstacles to entry is the validity period of the passport. In most countries of the world, there is a rule according to which the document must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. This requirement is designed to eliminate situations where the passport expires while the tourist is abroad.

However, rules vary depending on the destination:

    - **Schengen Area:** For trips to Poland, Germany, France, and other Schengen countries, the passport must be valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the zone.

    - **Popular resorts and Asia:** For entry to China, Thailand, Turkey, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, a passport valid for at least six months is required.

    - **United Kingdom:** Here, it is sufficient for the document to be valid for the entire period of stay.

The USA and Canada have a special status. Although the general recommendation for these countries also provides for a six-month buffer, an exception applies to Ukrainian citizens. Ukrainian biometric passports are automatically considered valid for an additional six months after the expiration date indicated in the document.

### Technical condition and blank pages

Validity period is not the only criterion. Border services of other countries may refuse entry due to the physical condition of the passport. The document is considered invalid if the following are found:

    - Damaged or missing pages;

    - Illegible records or erased personal data;

    - Damaged photograph;

    - Malfunctioning biometric chip;

    - Foreign inscriptions or marks.

In addition, before traveling, one should ensure that there are at least two blank pages in the passport for stamps or visas. Some states require the presence of a completely free page (without even partial marks).

### Change of data and processing times

An important nuance is the relevance of personal data. If a citizen of Ukraine has changed their surname, name, or other data, documents must be replaced within 30 days. Ignoring this rule can lead to problems at the border.

Migration service experts strongly recommend not waiting until the passport expires. It is better to apply for a new document six to nine months before the current one expires. This will help avoid delays, problems with visa opening, ticket purchases, and possible refusals when crossing the border.

Specialists remind that under martial law in Ukraine, the terms for processing and issuing passport documents may be extended due to security issues. Citizens can check the status of passport production through the State Migration Service service.
