### Record Imports and Seasonal Gaps

The situation in the Ukrainian food market demonstrates an unexpected trend: despite having its own potato supply, the country sharply increased imports of this vegetable in 2025. According to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine imported 123,600 tons of potatoes over the year, which is 2.4 times higher than the previous period. In monetary terms, this amounted to $66.3 million. The trend continues into early 2026: in the first four months alone, another 12,710 tons were imported, totaling $8.1 million.

The key factor determining the import structure is the climatic calendar. Egyptian potatoes, which account for 36% of imports between January and April 2026, ripen significantly earlier than local ones. This helps bridge the off-season gap when the domestic harvest is not yet ready. The ATB-Market retail chain confirmed that partial supplies of young Egyptian potatoes are justified precisely by these calendar factors.

### Logistical Collapse and Storage Shortages

The main reason imported products reached Ukrainian tables before local ones lies not in a lack of harvest, but in infrastructure issues. In 2024, the country suffered a drought leading to a poor harvest. With annual consumption at 4–4.5 million tons, only 51,000 tons were imported that year. To compensate for the deficit and bridge the gap until the new season, businesses were forced to sharply increase foreign purchases.

However, even with the availability of domestic potatoes, which became cheaper than imports in 2026, the market faces other barriers. The Ukrainian Club of Agribusiness (UKAB) points to a critical shortage of vegetable storage facilities, estimated at 50% to 60% of actual needs. Destroyed logistics and a lack of warehouse capacity prevent the effective preservation and processing of domestic products.

### Hidden Losses and Dependence on Processing

A separate issue remains the segment of processed products. The niche for frozen french fries, demanded by restaurants and fast-food chains (HoReCa), is almost entirely controlled by foreign suppliers. Poland holds 17% of the market in this segment. Experts estimate that due to a lack of domestic processing capacity, Ukraine loses over 1 billion hryvnias annually, sending these funds abroad.

In 2026, the market received its first positive signal: domestic young potatoes became cheaper than imports for the first time in several years. This was the result of harvest recovery after the dry 2024 season and the expansion of sown areas. Domestic production, totaling 16,781,100 tons, fully covers internal consumption. Experts are confident that, provided storage and processing capacities are developed, the country has every chance to finally displace imports and strengthen food independence.
