# Ukrainian volleyball club 'Barkom-Kazhany' relocates to Poland and changes its name to 'Jastrzębie Barkom'

The multiple-time Ukrainian champion and well-known participant of the Polish PlusLiga, the club 'Barkom-Kazhany', has announced a major transformation. The team has not only changed its name to 'Jastrzębie Barkom' but has also moved to a new home arena in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. This move was a result of the complex situation in Polish volleyball and an attempt to maintain a high level of play in the region.

### Reasons for rebranding and relocation

The main catalyst for the changes was the withdrawal of the four-time Polish champion club 'Jastrzębski Węgiel' from the Polish championship. Due to serious financial problems, the team ceased to exist, which threatened the development of volleyball in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. To preserve the sports infrastructure and fan interest, a decision was made to combine efforts with the Ukrainian club.

The initiative was supported by Adam Gorol, a member of the PlusLiga supervisory board and former president of 'Węgiel'. It was he who proposed the merger, which would allow the brand and traditions of the Polish city to be preserved. Gorol heads the new project as the club's president.

### Funding and management

Despite the change of name and location, the owner of the Ukrainian club, Oleg Baran, remains a key figure in the project. He continues to finance the team, ensuring stability during the transition period. The move to the arena in Jastrzębie-Zdrój was a logical step after previous locations — Krakow, Wieluń, Tarnów, and Elbląg, where 'Kazhany' played in different seasons.

### Changes in the roster and coaching staff

The team has undergone massive personnel changes. After almost ten years of work, the club was left by head coach Ugis Krastins. His place was taken by Andrzej Kowal — the former coach of 'Węgiel', which highlights the continuity between the old and new club.

Significant reshuffling has occurred in the team's roster. Ukrainian players Ilya Kovalev, Oleg Shevchenko, and Nikolay Kuts have left the club. At the same time, Yaroslav Pampushko, Vladislav Shchurov, and Andrey Rogozhin remain with the team. A contract renewal with attacking leader Vasyl Tupchiy is also expected.

Six Polish volleyball players will join the roster, which will strengthen the national composition and help integrate the team into the local environment.

### Unique conditions for Ukrainian players

During the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons, the club will receive a unique privilege from the PlusLiga: Ukrainian and Polish players in the team's roster will not be considered foreigners. This decision will allow for a balance between the national and foreign components to be maintained. Full foreigner status for Ukrainians will return only with the 2028/29 season.

### Fan reaction

Some local Polish fans greeted the creation of 'Jastrzębie Barkom' with skepticism. Some refused to support the club due to the change in the legal entity of their beloved team. However, the players and management are counting on a gradual resolution of the situation and the restoration of fan trust.

This step has become an important moment in the history of Ukrainian volleyball abroad, demonstrating the flexibility and adaptability of the club in the face of a changing sports landscape.
