# Lost your international driving license while traveling? How Ukrainians can get a new document without retaking exams

For Ukrainians planning trips abroad or already traveling, losing documents can become a serious problem. However, the Main Service Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has clarified the procedure for restoring an International Driving Permit (IDP). The good news is that in case of loss, theft, or damage to the document, you will not have to retake theoretical or practical exams.

### Restoration instead of retaking exams

An International Driving Permit is an additional document issued exclusively on the basis of a valid national driving license. It is necessary for driving motor vehicles in countries that have joined the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

In the event of loss of the IDP, it is not restored in the usual sense, but a completely new document is issued. This service is available at any Ministry of Internal Affairs service center, regardless of the place of registration or actual residence of the citizen.

### Validity periods and conditions for issuance

A new international permit is issued for a period of three years. However, there is an important limitation: the validity period of the international document cannot exceed the validity period of the national driving license on the basis of which it was issued.

To obtain a new IDP, the applicant must personally visit a service center and provide the original Ukrainian national driving license. This is a mandatory condition, as international driving licenses are valid only in conjunction with national ones.

### What to do in case of theft

Ministry of Internal Affairs employees recommend acting quickly if documents have been stolen. Regardless of whether the crime occurred on the territory of Ukraine or abroad, it is necessary to report this to the competent authorities of the National Police. This will help record the fact of theft and protect the owner from possible abuse by criminals.

Thus, the procedure for obtaining a new international permit is maximally simplified: with valid national driving licenses and no need to retake exams, the driver will be able to quickly return to legally driving a car abroad.
