# Ukrainians in Poland given deadline: passport data must be updated by August 31, 2026, or PESEL UKR status will be annulled

For hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians currently in Poland under temporary protection, a critical moment has arrived. A notification from the Polish Office for Foreigners (Urząd do Spraw Cudzoziemców) sends a clear signal: passport data must be updated in the registry by August 31, 2026. Ignoring this requirement threatens the loss of PESEL UKR status and all associated rights.

### Who will be affected by the changes?

Polish authorities are emphasizing specific groups of citizens whose data requires mandatory updating. Primarily, this concerns foreigners who received a PESEL number with UKR status based solely on a declaration, without presenting a valid travel document.

A particular cause for concern is the situation involving minors. Children under 18, whose identity was previously confirmed only based on photos entered in the passports of parents or legal representatives, are obliged to undergo the update procedure. The list also includes Ukrainians who obtained a new foreign passport after receiving their PESEL UKR number.

### Consequences of inaction

The deadlines set by Polish legislation are strict. If a valid passport is not presented to the municipal office by August 31, 2026, the UKR status will be annulled. This will result in the loss of the right to temporary protection in Poland.

Without a valid PESEL UKR status, it becomes impossible to obtain a CUKR residence card. This is a key document that legalizes stay and provides access to social guarantees, healthcare, and the labor market.

### How the procedure works

It is important to note that the process of updating information incurs no financial costs for applicants. The procedure is free and does not involve changing the PESEL number. Only current information about the new or valid identity document is entered into the registry.

This measure fits into the general trend of tightening control over migration flows and labor resources. It was previously reported that from July 8, 2026, Poland introduced enhanced checks on foreign labor contracts. Inspectors have been granted the right to convert civil-law agreements into official employment contracts if it is established that the worker is actually a staff member of the company.
