# UN Verdict: The Sea of Azov is not a 'Russian Lake'. Tribunal confirms Ukraine's rights and Russia's violations

The UN Arbitral Tribunal has issued a landmark ruling on one of the most acute maritime disputes of our time. The judicial body officially rejected Russia's claims to exclusive sovereignty over the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, confirming the status of these waters as internal waters shared by two states — Ukraine and Russia.

### The end of the 'Russian Lake' myth

The central point of the proceedings was the legal refutation of the thesis that the Sea of Azov is exclusively Russian territory. The Tribunal ruled that Ukraine retains its status as a coastal state in these waters. This means that Kyiv fully retains its sovereign rights, which were not annulled by unilateral actions taken by Moscow after 2022.

The court verdict established that attempts to change the status quo by force have no legal standing under international law.

### Environmental violations during bridge construction

Special attention in the ruling was paid to Russia's infrastructure projects in the region. The Tribunal found that Russia committed violations during the construction of the Crimean Bridge across the Kerch Strait, as well as during the laying of underwater power cables and gas pipelines.

The key factor in recognizing these violations was the lack of a proper environmental impact assessment for these projects. The Russian side failed to conduct necessary expert evaluations or publish their results, which the court classified as a direct violation of international rules for the protection of the marine environment.

### Kyiv's reaction and the history of the lawsuit

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called the Tribunal's ruling another confirmation that Russia systematically disregards norms of international law. The ministry emphasized that Moscow's attempts to impose the consequences of its aggression as a 'new reality' will not receive international recognition.

The legal proceedings were initiated by Ukraine back on September 14, 2016. The grounds for the lawsuit were Russia's actions violating the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which began in 2014 in the waters off occupied Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Kerch Strait.

### Military context and fleet relocation

The court verdict came against the backdrop of an escalating situation in the region. Currently, Russia is preparing to relocate the command of the Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol. According to available data, officers have already begun moving with their families to Novorossiysk, without waiting for official orders.

Meanwhile, hostilities continue. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are striking the bridge crossings leading to Crimea. The Russian side confirms new attacks, however, in its reports, it attempts to downplay the assessment of their consequences.
