Cardiovascular surgeons performed a unique operation for the first time in Ukraine, giving hope for life to a six-month-old boy. The child, whose weight barely reached seven kilograms, was on the brink of death due to a critical malfunction of the heart, but thanks to the skill of the doctors and modern equipment, his life was saved. ### When seconds count The story of the little patient began with a severe congenital defect that doctors discovered immediately after his birth in 2025. Recently, the baby had already undergone a complex open surgery to correct the defect. However, the intervention led to an unforeseen and dangerous complication: the child's heart stopped generating the electrical impulses necessary for contractions on its own. Medications had no effect, and the situation was rapidly developing towards tragedy. ### Emergency evacuation and jewelry precision Realizing that the situation was critical, colleagues from the children's hospital immediately contacted Professor Yuriy Karpenko. An urgent consultation was held, and a special team of anesthesiologists and surgeons urgently transported the infant to the Regional Cardiovascular Surgery Center. Here, the doctors faced a colossal challenge: they had to operate on a tiny body only 80 centimeters tall. The operation required incredible precision and jewelry craftsmanship. The surgeons successfully implanted a microscopic pacemaker. Now this modern device takes on the role of the "conductor," controlling every beat of the child's heart and maintaining the correct rhythm. ### Technology and professionalism Doctors emphasize that the success of this first intervention in Ukraine was made possible thanks to the combination of two factors: the highest professionalism of the surgical team and the presence of the latest diagnostic equipment in the cardiac center. It was these tools that made it possible to perform the most complex manipulation, which was previously unavailable in the country. This case is yet another proof that Odesa doctors are capable of solving world-class tasks, saving the smallest and most defenseless patients.
