The US Department of the Treasury announced the lifting of counter-terrorism sanctions against the Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad Airlines. This decision also covered two Boeing 737 aircraft owned by the carrier. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing official data from the department.

### Administrative decision, not a policy shift

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) clarified that this action is administrative. The department emphasized that the lifting of restrictions does not signify a change in US policy towards Iran or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Despite this, the airline's general director remains on the sanctions list.

Previously, in January 2024, Fly Baghdad Airlines was added to the sanctions lists. The basis for this was suspicion of aiding the IRGC-Quds Force. Specifically, the airline was accused of transporting weapons and fighters to Syria and Lebanon for the armed groups "Hezbollah" and "Kata'ib Hezbollah".

### Context of regional restrictions

The decision to lift sanctions from one carrier comes against the backdrop of increased pressure on other Iranian entities. Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that on July 29, two Iranian companies and eight tankers fell under US economic restrictions. The list included insurance organizations Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority.

Also discussed in the regional agenda is the proposed agreement between Iran and Oman, which, according to experts, could give Tehran control over ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf.

### Washington's stance on the straits

Issues of navigation and security in the Middle East remain in the focus of the US administration. US President Donald Trump stated that the straits in the region, which were closed following the conflict with Iran, will soon be opened. According to him, the restoration of shipping could happen either as a result of negotiations or after a military strike.
