# Putin's Aide: Europe is giving Kyiv 'stubbornness' and hindering the implementation of agreements with Trump

Assistant to the President of Russia, Yuri Ushakov, commented on the situation surrounding the implementation of the agreements reached during the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. According to the Russian official, the key factor hindering the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict is the position of Kyiv, bolstered by the support of European countries.

### "Understanding" instead of "agreements"

Ushakov clarified the terminology regarding the results of the leaders' meeting in Alaska. He noted that it is more correct to use the word "understandings" rather than "agreements." According to him, the parties reached a mutual understanding of actions in the context of conflict resolution. The American side, according to the President's aide, undertook obligations to fulfill its part of these understandings, however, it encountered a number of difficulties in the process.

### The European factor and Kyiv's reaction

Yuri Ushakov directly linked the emerging difficulties to the behavior of the Ukrainian side. He expressed the opinion that the difficulties are related to Kyiv's reaction to American "probes" and appeals. The Russian official was particularly outraged by the fact that Ukraine relies on the support of European countries. In Ushakov's opinion, it is precisely this factor that gives the Ukrainian side "more stubbornness" and "negativity" during negotiations.

### Different interpretations of the "spirit of Anchorage"

The events in question relate to August of last year, when Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a meeting in Alaska to discuss the terms for ending the war. Since then, the Russian side has insisted on the need for strict compliance with the agreements reached at that meeting.

However, the Ukrainian leadership views the situation differently. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously noted that it creates the impression that the parties are talking about completely different things. At the end of winter, he stated that Russia often appeals to the "spirit of Anchorage," however, Ukrainians are left only to guess what exactly Russian colleagues mean by this term.
