# Visa and OpenAI: AI Gains Access to Your Money and Starts Shopping on Its Own

The world of e-commerce is experiencing a revolutionary shift. Payment giant Visa and the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, have joined forces to integrate the global payment network directly into the artificial intelligence interface. Now, users can delegate not only information search to AI but also the independent execution of purchases.

### From Search to Purchase: How It Works

The essence of this new alliance is simple and radical. The user links their Visa card to their ChatGPT profile and gives a text instruction. For example, "find noise-canceling wireless headphones for less than $150" or "order groceries from the list." The AI assistant will independently search for the best options on the internet, arrange delivery, and initiate the transaction. The entire process takes place within the chat, without the need to visit third-party websites or manually enter card details.

### Lessons from the Past and New Rules of the Game

This is not OpenAI's first attempt to enter the e-commerce market. Last year, the company launched the Instant Checkout tool, which was intended to act as a digital shopper. However, the project failed: the system frequently made mistakes, and the requirement of a high 4% commission on the cost of goods deterred sellers, leading to the closure of the service.

The new partnership format with Visa changes the situation. OpenAI provides the intelligent core and communication algorithms, while Visa takes on the critically important functions: payment authorization, transaction security, and operations with millions of stores worldwide.

### Risks and Capital Protection

Handing over the right to manage money in bank accounts to algorithms raises justified concerns among retailers and financial experts. The risk of AI error—from the wrong size to buying the wrong item or exceeding the budget—could lead to mass complaints about unauthorized charges.

To minimize these risks, Visa is implementing a multi-level digital protection system:

- **Strict spending limits:** The user can clearly limit the maximum amount that the AI is allowed to spend per transaction or per month.

- **Human-in-the-loop principle:** In the initial stages, ChatGPT will not be able to charge money unnoticed. Before the final payment, the user will receive a notification on their smartphone for mandatory purchase verification.

- **Updated security token:** Visa is adapting the Intelligent Commerce system to accurately recognize transactions initiated by AI, distinguishing them from actions performed by a living human.

All disputes and refunds will be resolved according to the standard global rules of the payment system. The key factor will be establishing the fact of the user's intent to make a purchase and the correctness of the request processing by the store.

### Competitive Battle: B2B vs B2C

Visa's main competitor, Mastercard, is also actively implementing AI technologies but is betting on a different segment. Instead of retail shopping for individuals, Mastercard focuses on automating business tasks (B2B). Mastercard's AI agents are trained to purchase services for companies: from hiring web developers to buying advertising packages on Google and Meta for business promotion.

Developers admit that full automation takes time. However, Visa predicts rapid user adaptation: after hundreds of confirmed manual requests and verification of system reliability, people will likely allow AI to buy basic household items fully automatically with a single click.
