# Watermelons are getting cheaper, while tomatoes are getting more expensive: how food prices in Ukraine have changed over the week

The food market in Ukraine is showing divergent trends: while prices for some vegetables and fruits continue to fall, certain items have risen significantly in cost. Analysts from the EastFruit project, whose data is cited by RBC-Ukraine, recorded significant changes in wholesale prices during the period from July 10 to 17.

### "Borscht set" and seasonal vegetables

The situation on the vegetable counter remains volatile. In particular, there is a decrease in the cost of some items traditionally included in the "borscht set." Cauliflower has noticeably become cheaper: a week ago, the price per kilogram ranged from 45 to 50 hryvnias, while now the price range has dropped to 30–50 hryvnias.

In contrast, red tomatoes have demonstrated a steady increase in price. If the wholesale price previously ranged from 30 to 60 hryvnias, it has now risen to 40–75 hryvnias per kilogram.

### Watermelon became the leader in price reduction

The fruit and berry segment also noted a price correction downwards. The main driver of this decline was the watermelon. Experts attribute this to a sharp increase in supply in the market.

"As we predicted, the watermelon has become the new leader of the trading platform in terms of the number of listed offers, with participants from Ukraine continuing to increase its sales," note the EastFruit analysts. The increase in volumes of domestic products on the shelves directly affects pricing.

### What Ukrainians are buying

Despite price fluctuations, demand for certain categories of goods remains consistently high. Sweet corn and berries intended for freezing continue to be the most popular among buyers and processors. This indicates that seasonal demand for fresh and preserved products remains a key factor for the agricultural sector.
