# WhatsApp is changing the game: independence for iPad, voice control in cars, and a PDF editor

The WhatsApp team has announced a major update that fundamentally changes the approach to using the messenger on various devices. Developers have focused on three key areas: tablet autonomy, driving safety, and document handling. These changes affect users of iOS, Android, and desktop versions.

### Tablets are no longer secondary

One of the most anticipated innovations is the support for creating a WhatsApp account directly on iPad tablets. Until now, devices running iPadOS could function exclusively as companion screens, strictly tied to a primary smartphone. Now the situation has changed.

Users can set up an account directly within the app on the tablet. A phone number is still required for initial registration to receive a one-time verification code, but once the procedure is complete, the account becomes fully autonomous. This opens up new possibilities for those who use a tablet as their primary device for communication.

### Safety behind the wheel: CarPlay and Android Auto update

Developers have significantly redesigned the messenger's integration with automotive systems Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The update aims to minimize driver distraction from the road.

Now, message management is intuitive and voice-controlled: drivers can listen to incoming messages and reply to them by voice through the car's native interface. Additionally, access to call history and a list of favorite contacts has appeared on the dashboard screen, allowing for quick calls without the need to pick up the phone.

### PDF editor and music in Statuses

For the desktop and web versions of WhatsApp, a built-in PDF document viewer has been implemented, developed based on Adobe Acrobat technologies. This solution eliminates the need to download files to the disk. Users can open documents directly inside the chat, leave text annotations, and highlight important text fragments.

The "Statuses" section has added direct integration with streaming services Apple Music and Spotify. Now users can publish the current track in their status, allowing contacts to see exactly what they are listening to at the moment.

### Context of updates

These innovations complement a series of recent changes in the messenger. Previously, the company introduced unique usernames that allow hiding phone numbers from interlocutors, as well as launched the premium WhatsApp Plus tariff plan.
