Nevertheless, the question of exactly when one should resort to surgical intervention and when conservative methods are sufficient remains one of the most common at a plastic surgeon's consultation. For the publication Wave (RBC-Ukraine), plastic surgeon Alexander Matviyuk explained whether there is a “too young” age for plastic surgery and whether it is possible to overdo the number of procedures. ### Age Is Not the Main Benchmark: Indications Matter According to Matviyuk, there is no universal age threshold in plastic surgery after which or before which any operations are categorically prohibited. “There is no concept of ‘early’ in plastic surgery, because an intervention is performed strictly on the basis of indications,” the doctor emphasizes. In his words, the main benchmark should not be the numbers in a passport, but the patient's specific anatomical features, the presence of real indications, and their state of health. This means that two patients of the same age may have entirely different indications for surgery — or none at all. ### Blepharoplasty, Mastoplasty, Liposuction: Specific Examples The surgeon gave several illustrative examples. Blepharoplasty, for instance, can be relevant even for young patients: if hooded eyelids or pronounced fat hernias in the periorbital area are due to a genetic predisposition and create persistent aesthetic discomfort, the doctor is entitled to consider surgery as a way to correct this feature. A similar approach applies to breast surgery: mastoplasty encompasses augmentation, reduction, and lift, and the reason for seeking it may be either insufficient volume that does not meet the patient's expectations or an excessively large breast that causes physical discomfort. Another area is the correction of localized fat deposits. If certain areas (“sides,” “love handles,” the lower abdomen) are resistant to change through diet and physical activity, liposuction becomes one of the correction options. ### Where the Boundary Lies: The Risk of Overdoing It At the same time, Matviyuk acknowledges that in plastic surgery it is indeed possible to cross a line, when the number or nature of interventions no longer corresponds to the patient's real need. Such a situation becomes especially risky when the surgeon lacks sufficient experience or when the doctor tries to fulfill any patient's wish, even if there are no adequate medical indications for it. The decision on any surgical intervention, the specialist emphasizes, should be made only after an in-person consultation and an assessment of the real indications. The mere desire to change a certain feature of one's appearance does not mean that surgery is required for it. ### A Surgeon's Refusal Is Also a Professional Decision A professional consultation, in Matviyuk's words, sometimes ends not with a recommendation to have surgery but with a reasoned refusal. If the surgeon does not see sufficient indications or believes that the expected result does not justify the risks of the intervention, a refusal is also the right decision. “Personally, I have consultations after which I know for sure that there will be no deal, and that is also the right choice,” the doctor says. Thus, the question of “is it too early to have plastic surgery” does not come down to measuring age: what matters more are specific anatomical features, the presence of indications, the state of health, the patient's realistic expectations, and the decision made after a consultation with a qualified specialist. ### Contradictory Data Matviyuk's position that age is not a determining factor conflicts with a number of other expert assessments published in Russian media. For example, according to the publication Gazeta.ru (2024), plastic surgeons name the period after 30–35 years as the optimal age for blepharoplasty, while the portal Life.ru states that the optimal age for a facelift is 45–55 years. These assessments, however, are of a recommended and average nature and do not contradict the thesis of the priority of individual indications: they reflect the statistically most common age groups in which specific procedures yield the maximum aesthetic effect with minimal risks.
