# Nightmare on Grass: Yastremska Crashes in Nottingham and Exits Top 60

The grass season for the Ukrainian team started with disappointment. Dayana Yastremska, hoping to repeat last year's success, suffered a sensational defeat in the second round of the WTA 250 tournament in Nottingham. The match against the experienced German Tatjana Maria turned into complete domination by the opponent, and the final score of 0:6, 0:6 became a real blow for the 50th-ranked player in the world.

### Sensation in Nottingham: 55 Minutes Without a Chance

The Round of 16 match at the Lexus Nottingham Open was expected to be competitive. Dayana Yastremska, ranked 50th, faced 38-year-old Tatjana Maria, who is ranked only 117th. However, there was no hint of competition on the court. The match lasted only 55 minutes and turned into a nightmare for the Ukrainian.

Yastremska demonstrated catastrophic play on her serve: there were no aces, but four double faults and six break points converted by her opponent. Maria, on the other hand, recorded four aces and confidently took two sets. This defeat was the second consecutive loss for Dayana in head-to-head meetings with the German — their first match in Hua Hin in 2023 also ended unsuccessfully.

### Ranking Consequences: Farewell to the Top 60

The defeat in Nottingham has serious tournament consequences for the Ukrainian tennis player. Last season, Dayana showed her best result on grass here, reaching the final. Due to an early exit this year, she failed to defend her points, which will guarantee her exit from the top 60 best tennis players in the world after the next WTA ranking update.

Since the start of the grass season, Yastremska has played only four matches, winning exactly half of them. In the first round of the tournament, she also had a tough time: the Ukrainian managed to overcome British "lucky loser" Alicia Dudeney with a score of 6:4, 7:6.

### Dramatic Finish for Starodubtseva and Success in Doubles

On the same day, Yuliia Starodubtseva (WTA 59) also left the singles draw. Her match against the third-seeded American Emma Navarro turned into a real three-hour thriller. Starodubtseva led in the second set 5:0 and had two set points, then led 3:1 in the deciding set, but ultimately missed the victory with a score of 4:6, 7:6 (7:3), 4:6. Despite the exit, Yuliia set a personal record by reaching the second round of a singles tournament of this level for the first time.

The only positive of the day for Ukrainian fans was Starodubtseva's performance in the doubles draw. In a duo with Canadian Leylah Fernandez, she started triumphantly, sweeping the Japanese-Taiwanese tandem of Eri Hozumi and Wu Fang-hsien in 56 minutes with a score of 6:0, 6:2. In the quarterfinals, they will face a test in the form of the second-seeded Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching.

### Looking Ahead: Preparation for Wimbledon

For the top Ukrainian tennis players, the Nottingham Open in singles is officially over. The tournament, held on open grass courts, is a traditional warm-up before the main event of the season — Wimbledon. Here, players adapt their style to the fast surface after a prolonged clay series.

Now Dayana Yastremska's main goal is to thoroughly work on her mistakes and prepare for Wimbledon 2026, which will begin in London on June 29. The Ukrainian needs to urgently review her game to avoid repeating such scenarios at the most prestigious tournament of the year.
