# Zelensky proposes freezing the front line: 'The fastest path to peace'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has put forward a radical proposal to end hostilities: freeze the front line in its current state. According to the head of state, this is the most effective and fastest way to stop the bloodshed and shift the conflict from a military phase to a diplomatic one.

Zelensky outlined his views on the peace process in an exclusive interview with Sky News, which was broadcast live. Journalist Yalda Hakim asked the president a direct question about Kyiv's readiness to agree to a ceasefire based on current positions.

### The formula for 'quick peace'

— If a ceasefire were agreed upon tomorrow, where would you like the front lines to be frozen? Where they are now? Would you agree to that? — the host asked.

Zelensky's answer left no room for ambiguity: 'Yes'. He emphasized that this is the 'fastest way'.

It is important to understand that the Ukrainian leader does not view a freeze as a temporary pause or a tactical respite. In his strategy, it is a tool to launch a full-fledged peace process.

— We want to stop the war in such a way that it does not return. The idea is not just to freeze the situation, but the fastest way is to freeze the situation and move it into a diplomatic mode, — Zelensky explained.

### Why this benefits Ukraine

A key aspect of the proposal is maintaining the status quo on the battlefield. When asked if this means de facto agreeing to Russia's terms, the president answered in the negative. He justified his position with humanitarian and strategic factors.

— No, it is not just about giving. Staying where we are means giving the people of Ukraine more opportunities to save their children, and soldiers — to return. I think that is important for us, — Zelensky stated.

Thus, the priority in this scenario becomes saving lives and shifting the conflict to the plane of negotiations, where the parties' positions will be defended by diplomatic methods rather than artillery.

### Negotiation context

Kyiv's proposal fits into the broader picture of diplomatic activity, which has intensified since the beginning of 2026. During this time, Ukraine, Russia, and the US have held several rounds of consultations.

During these meetings, the positions of the parties remained rigid: Kyiv proposed freezing current positions along the front line, while Moscow insisted on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territories of the Donbas that are currently outside Kyiv's control. As a compromise, the US proposed the creation of a free economic zone on the disputed territories.

Attempts to establish direct dialogue at the highest level have not yet been successful. On June 4, Zelensky published an open letter to Vladimir Putin with a proposal for a personal meeting. However, the Russian leader, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, rejected this proposal.
