# Zelenskyy and Madjar agree on a meeting and joint visit to Zakarpattia: what lies behind this step

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Madjar have agreed to hold a bilateral meeting in the near future. Additionally, the leaders of the two countries plan to make a joint trip to the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine.

This was announced by Peter Madjar himself in a video address published on Facebook. According to him, a preliminary conversation with Zelenskyy took place on July 7 during the opening of the NATO summit in Ankara.

### Format of negotiations and visit route

The politicians agreed to hold full-fledged negotiations. The location of the meeting has not yet been finally determined — it could take place either in Kyiv or in Budapest. After the official consultations are completed, Zelenskyy and Madjar plan to visit the city of Berehove in the Zakarpattia region together.

This step has important symbolic significance, considering that Kyiv and Budapest previously signed a historic agreement guaranteeing the educational, cultural, linguistic, and political rights of the Hungarian national minority in Zakarpattia.

### Hungary's position on supporting Ukraine

During the NATO summit, Madjar emphasized that Ukraine is a victim in the current conflict, calling Russia an unambiguous aggressor and the culprit of the war. At the same time, he confirmed Budapest's unchanged position: Hungary will continue to provide Ukraine with humanitarian aid exclusively.

Hungary refuses to provide weapons or send its own troops — this position remains unchanged.

### Context: relations between Ukraine and Hungary in recent months

Relations between the two countries have been tense recently. During the EU summit, Hungary managed to exclude a clause on accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union from the final declaration. Peter Madjar played a decisive role in this.

Nevertheless, the agreement on a meeting and a joint visit to Zakarpattia indicates the readiness of both sides for dialogue and seeking compromises, especially in issues concerning the rights of national minorities and regional stability.
