Today, May 27, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SOF) celebrate their first major milestone — a decade. This is not just an anniversary, but an opportunity to look back at the path of an elite force that takes on tasks considered “impossible” for others.

### A Branch of Service That Changes the Rules of the Game

The Special Operations Forces are a distinct branch within the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU), uniting unique units. Their mission goes beyond standard combat operations: they are the first to penetrate the enemy’s rear — by land, sea, and air — creating conditions for large-scale operations to liberate territories.

SOF warriors are equipped with the most modern technology and utilize cutting-edge military innovations. But their strength lies not only in their gear. The SOF develops intelligence networks on temporarily occupied territories, while psychological operations units wage battle against the enemy both on the front lines and deep in their rear.

### From the 2007 Directive to a Separate Branch of Service

The history of the SOF began in 2007 with a directive from then-Minister of Defense Anatoliy Hrytsenko to create the SOF Directorate. However, the real breakthrough occurred after the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in Donbas. It became clear: what was needed were not just special units, but a separate branch of service capable of acting autonomously and with maximum efficiency.

In April 2015, the General Staff supported the idea of creating an independent SOF structure, subordinate directly to the Ministry of Defense. On June 16, 2016, the Verkhovna Rada officially legalized the SOF and the Air Assault Forces as separate branches of the ZSU.

### Symbolism: The Wolf, Laurel, and Trident

The SOF emblem is not just a drawing. It is a symbol rooted in ancient legends. At its center is a wolf, girded with a belt, set against a laurel wreath. In Ukrainian mythology, the wolf embodies a warrior ready for self-sacrifice, confident, and believing in the strength of their “pack.” The silver color of the fur symbolizes nobility and reason, while the laurel wreath represents eternal glory and victory.

The Trident on the emblem is the personal heraldic sign of Prince Sviatoslav the Brave, the patron of the SOF. It reminds us of the roots of the Ukrainian military and the feats of the warriors of Rus-Ukraine, whose heirs are today’s special forces operators.

### The Motto “I Come Upon You” and the New Holiday Date

The SOF motto is “I Come Upon You” (Idu na vy). These words, spoken by Prince Sviatoslav before a battle, have become a symbol of determination and confidence in victory. They demoralize the enemy and inspire their own. It is precisely this phrase that reflects the essence of the SOF mission: to act boldly, decisively, and without fear.

The official Day of the Special Operations Forces was established on July 26, 2016, by decree of President Petro Poroshenko. However, on May 26, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy changed the holiday date to May 27. This change has deep symbolic meaning: it was on May 27, 2014, that special forces conducted one of their first successful operations in eastern Ukraine — liberating the new terminal of Donetsk Airport and raising the Ukrainian flag over it.

Ten years of the SOF is a story of professionalism, courage, and loyalty to the oath. It is the story of an elite that fears no impossibility and is always ready to fulfill its mission.
