The Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) has announced the results of a large-scale vote dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the country's independence. Based on the results of a public poll involving thousands of fans, a symbolic national team has been formed. This project, titled "11 Lions of Independence," aims to reflect the contribution of the best players from different generations to the history of Ukrainian football.
Scale of the Vote and Selection Methodology
The process of forming the team was fully delegated to the fans, allowing for the most objective assessment of players' merits from the public's perspective. In total, more than 57,000 votes were cast on the UAF website. Statistics show a high interest in the history of the national team: fans actively discussed candidates, comparing the achievements of veterans with the successes of current footballers. The final list included representatives of different eras, however, players who shone on the field in the 2000s and 2010s received the greatest representation.
Composition of the Symbolic Team: From Shevchenko to Malinovskyi
The legendary goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov (Note: The source text mentions Shevchenko as a forward and Shovkovskyi as the goalkeeper. I will correct the translation to match the source text's logic regarding Shovkovskyi being the goalkeeper). The legendary goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyi took the goalkeeping position in the symbolic eleven. The choice of the "Dynamo" and Ukraine goalkeeper was, according to experts, the most expected, considering his status as the most decorated goalkeeper in the history of the national team. In midfield, fans combined the power and experience of Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka with the technique and functionality of Taras Stepanenko and Ruslan Malinovskyi. Such a mix of generations demonstrates the continuity of generations in Ukrainian football.
Sensation in Attack and Defense Selection
The attacking line of the symbolic team caused the most discussion. Alongside the "Ballon d'Or" holder Andriy Shevchenko, who became the undisputed leader of the vote, fans chose forward Yevhen Seleznyov. This decision became the main surprise, as many expected to see Serhiy Rebrov in the attack, who is also a legend of Ukrainian football. At the same time, the defensive line received high marks for modernity: Ilya Zabarnyi and Vitaliy Mykolenko took their places in defense, which testifies to the recognition of the merits of the current national team squad.
Significance of the Project for Ukrainian Sport
The published list of "11 Lions of Independence" became not just sports statistics, but an important cultural event. It allowed fans of different ages to unite around a common history. The inclusion of both veterans and current players in the squad highlights the dynamics of the development of Ukrainian football over the last three and a half decades. The UAF project became an opportunity for every fan to personally vote for their idols and leave a mark on the history of the national team.
