Preparations for the launch of fifth-generation mobile communication technology — 5G — are gaining momentum in Kyiv. Ukrainian operators are already carrying out the necessary technical work, however, the exact date for the start of network operations in the capital has not yet been determined.
Rumors of a July 21 launch remain unconfirmed
An image, allegedly taken from Kyivstar resources, claiming that 5G in Kyiv would go live on July 21, spread across social media, particularly in Telegram channels. However, RBC-Ukraine journalists could not find confirmation of this information on the operator's official resources.
Official position of the Ministry of Digital Transformation
RBC-Ukraine sought clarification from the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, which oversees this process jointly with telecommunications operators. The ministry stated that it is premature to discuss a specific launch date.
"All operators are preparing for the launch of 5G in Kyiv and are conducting the necessary technical work. The exact launch date will be announced after the preparation is completed and the network is actually launched," the Ministry of Digital Transformation stated.
Where is 5G already working in Ukraine?
The 5G technology is already functioning in some regions of the country. Lviv was the first city where the new standard was launched. Today, the network also operates in Borodyanka and Kharkiv, although it is currently available only in certain districts of these settlements. Coverage is planned to be expanded in the future.
What will happen to 3G?
Parallel to the introduction of new technologies, the process of phasing out outdated standards is underway. Earlier, the Ministry of Digital Transformation stated that the 3G technology would be completely switched off in Ukraine by 2030. Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytko provided more details on this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
