On July 1, 2026, in Kyiv, during the closed-door Brave1 Advantage event, a landmark occurred that could reshape the architecture of defense cooperation in the region. The Ukrainian state defense technology cluster Brave1 and the European aerospace giant Airbus Defence and Space signed a memorandum of understanding. This agreement formalizes the creation of the first full-scale industrial partnership between a Ukrainian platform and a major Western defense corporation under the Brave Prime initiative.
From Theory to Practice: the "Test in Ukraine" Program
The essence of the agreement goes beyond declarative intentions. The document provides for the creation of joint working groups that will work on the full cycle of interaction — from fundamental R&D to the modernization of existing weapon systems. A key element of the partnership is the integration of Airbus technologies into the state "Test in Ukraine" program.
Under this mechanism, large-scale tests in real combat conditions are planned. The focus is on unmanned aerial systems (UAVs), electronic warfare (EW) means, and satellite communication systems. The uniqueness of the approach lies in the closed feedback loop: telemetry and efficiency data collected during tests will directly influence the production cycle. This will allow for the rapid adjustment of the architecture and software of the complexes, reducing the time from idea to implementation.
Economic Weight and Technological Exchange
The partnership unites two different but complementary ecosystems. Airbus SE, whose defense division specializes in A400M military transport aircraft, Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, and advanced UAVs (Eurodrone, SIRTAP), demonstrates financial stability with an annual revenue of €73.4 billion. For the Ukrainian side, this is access to the deep competencies of the European aerospace sector.
Brave1's Operating Director, Irina Zabolotna, emphasized the pragmatism of the alliance: cooperation allows combining European expertise with the short development cycles that have become the calling card of the Ukrainian mil-tech sector. In turn, Airbus Defence and Space representative Josef Müller noted that integration into the Ukrainian ecosystem is aimed at strengthening the architecture of Europe's collective security.
New Rules of the Game and Legal Frameworks
The event takes place against the backdrop of significant legislative changes. Ukraine has decided to allow local manufacturers to access export procedures regarding 27 partner states, opening new horizons for joint developments. The Airbus Corporation has also been officially approved as a strategic partner of the upcoming Defence Tech Valley summit, which will take place in Lviv.
It is important to note that all processes, including the testing of foreign technologies, are carried out under the strict control of relevant ministries in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On the Introduction of Martial Law". This guarantees that technological exchange will take place within the framework of ensuring national security, without compromising sovereignty and operational secrecy.
