Ukrainian center Alexey Len, 33, is one step away from signing a contract with the Basque club Baskonia, which competes in the Spanish championship and the EuroLeague. This is reported by Sport RBC.UA, citing the Spanish newspaper AS. Thus, the experienced big man of the Ukrainian national team will most likely continue his career in the Pyrenees, without changing leagues or moving to new countries.
Parting ways with Madrid's Real
Alexey Len's previous club was Madrid's Real, which he joined in October 2025. However, already in the summer of 2026 the two sides reached an agreement to terminate their cooperation early. According to the source, the decision was made by mutual consent and was not accompanied by any public conflicts. In the "whites'" squad, the Ukrainian center played 49 matches in all competitions, becoming one of the key players on the front line of the team in the first half of the season.
The injury that changed the course of the season
In the Spanish championship, Len averaged 6.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 12.4 minutes of playing time. However, the final part of the season for the Ukrainian was spoiled by an injury — a left foot plantar fascia injury sustained at the end of the regular season. Due to this problem, Len missed the decisive EuroLeague matches and the Spanish championship playoffs, which, most likely, became one of the factors that influenced the decision to terminate his contract with Real early.
Baskonia as a logical next step
Len's new potential team — Baskonia from Vitoria-Gasteiz — finished third in the regular Spanish championship at the end of the past campaign. In the playoffs, the Basques lost to Joventut in the quarterfinals and ended their title run. Signing an experienced big man of this level should fill a problematic position in the team's roster and strengthen it in the upcoming EuroLeague and Endesa league season.
Career context and the significance of the move
For the 33-year-old Len, a move to Baskonia will not be his first experience playing in Spanish basketball, which simplifies adaptation and allows him to immediately get into the game without any language or cultural barrier. For the Ukrainian national team, having such an experienced center in the strongest European league remains an important resource ahead of international tournaments. The official announcement of the contract signing is expected in the coming days.
