Ukrainian freestyle wrestler Anastasiia Alpeeva won the gold medal at the 2026 Wrestling World Championships. In the 76 kg weight class final, she defeated her opponent from India 8:6, sealing the victory in the dying moments of the bout. This award became the first for the Ukrainian national team at the current world championship and the best result in the 24-year-old athlete's career at senior world championships.

Path to the final: early victory in the semifinals

Anastasiia Alpeeva became the first representative of the Ukrainian national team to reach the gold medal final at the 2026 World Championships. In the semifinal bout, she secured an early victory over Turkish wrestler Kadri Aksoy Kocak with a score of 11:0, leaving her opponent no chance to continue the match. Thus, the Ukrainian advanced to the decisive bout, where she faced the Indian athlete.

A final decided in the final seconds

The decisive bout was fiercely contested. Alpeeva started actively, pushed her opponent out of bounds, and opened the score, but the Indian wrestler twice managed to equalize. At 4:4, the advantage of the last scoring action was with the representative of India, and she was a step away from victory. The turning point came 13 seconds before the end: the Ukrainian executed a four-point attack, brought her opponent to the mat, and took an 8:4 lead. The Indian wrestler managed to narrow the gap, but Alpeeva held on to win 8:6.

Records for the national team

Alpeeva's gold is Ukraine's first-ever in the heaviest women's weight class (72–76 kg), where previously Ukrainian female wrestlers had only won bronze medals. For the athlete herself, this is her best result at senior world championships: her previous maximum was fifth place, achieved in 2025.

Context of Ukraine's performance at the tournament

Before Alpeeva's victory, the Ukrainian team remained without medals at the 2026 World Championships. Oksana Livach, Solomiia Vynnyk, and Parviz Nasibov all fell just short of the podium, losing their bronze medal matches. Thus, it was the 76 kg final that brought the Ukrainian team its first medal of the world championship.
