Anthropic recently submitted an amended S-1/A form, revealing a notable technical detail alongside financial metrics: the company is on the verge of creating an artificial intelligence model capable of Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI). This concept denotes the stage at which AI becomes so efficient at its own training that its capabilities begin to grow with rapid acceleration. For proponents of cautious AI development, RSI is perceived as the point of no return—a moment after which the system could spin out of control. For enthusiasts, the technology conversely symbolizes the realization of AI's full potential: increased productivity, scientific discoveries, and other achievements.
The Company Itself Included RSI Among Risk Factors
The term RSI entered common parlance relatively recently and was initially viewed as an unattainable goal—an effect extremely difficult to implement in practice. Now, however, Anthropic has listed it among risk factors in a public document. The company noted that it already utilizes AI in research and development, including the creation of new models "whose qualitative jumps in capabilities went unnoticed in a timely manner." In the near future, it says, progress could accelerate significantly precisely due to the application of AI.
«Responsible Scaling Policy» and the Acceleration Threshold
Anthropic emphasizes that RSI carries both immense opportunities and severe risks. In the document, the company warns: using AI to create more advanced AI systems "could pose a significant security threat, especially if it rapidly accelerates the pace of progress." This is one of the aspects factored into the «Responsible Scaling Policy», which outlines plans for monitoring and mitigating risks as the approach to recursive self-improvement continues. The company's internal estimates and forecasts indicate that the threshold of "AI-driven significant acceleration of progress" may be reached soon. At the same time, currently, none of Anthropic's models are classified as having crossed this threshold, and the company continues to analyze relevant data.
Autonomy Under Human Control
Anthropic also stated that it does not expect to rely heavily on existing AI systems for "fully autonomous design and creation of subsequent generations of advanced models without meaningful human control or understanding—even if (and when) that becomes technically feasible." Thus, the company registers its intention to maintain human oversight over the development process even in a scenario where technical limitations are lifted.
Marketing or a Signal?
A separate view is that the S-1 form may act not only as a means of disclosure but also as marketing material. Nevertheless, over the past year, Anthropic's AI has made a noticeable leap in the scientific field, and if the company itself considers the likelihood of RSI occurring to be high, then, according to the publication's authors, it should be taken seriously. The document remains an important public signal of how major AI developers assess their own risks and prepare for a potential sharp acceleration in model development.
