Ukrainian film director Antonio Lukich is convinced that the country has the potential to produce dozens of high-quality films every year. However, this requires systematic state support.

The potential of Ukrainian cinema

In an interview with the Ukrinform agency (citing RBC-Ukraine), Lukich stated that there are up to 10–20 authors in Ukraine capable of creating original and strong cinema. In his opinion, provided there is stable financing and organizational assistance from the state, the country could release around 20 significant films per year.

"I believe that we have up to 10–20, perhaps, authors who, I think, could shoot something original. I directly believe in a top twenty of strong films from Ukraine annually. With unconditional state support," the director emphasized.

State program as an example

As an example of successful state support, Lukich cited the "Tysyachovesna" program, which finances cultural projects in Ukraine. According to him, it is precisely such mechanisms that allow ambitious ideas to be realized and brought to the audience.

Cinema is a feat

The director reminded that making a film is not just a creative process but a true feat. "Every shot film is a feat of one person or a whole group of people. I say this as someone who has shot two films. It is very difficult," he noted.

Antonio Lukich is a Ukrainian director and screenwriter from Uzhhorod, born in 1992. He graduated from the Karpenko-Kary Institute of Theatre, Cinema and Television in Kyiv. In his works, he combines dramatic stories with subtle humor, often addressing themes of family relationships, self-discovery, and human emotions.

Successful projects

Lukich already has two feature films to his credit, which have received recognition both in Ukraine and abroad:

  • "My Thoughts Are Quiet" (2019) — a debut film about a young sound engineer and his mother. The film received a special jury award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and became the winner of the Golden Dzyga award.
  • "Luxembourg, Luxembourg" (2022) — a tragicomedy starring brothers Amil and Ramil Nasirov from the band "Kurgan and Agregat" in the lead roles. The film was shown in the "Horizons" competition section of the Venice Film Festival and became one of the most successful films in the Ukrainian box office.

New project

Currently, Lukich is working on a new international project — the film "The Girl Who Screams". This is the story of a Ukrainian woman who ends up in Ireland after the start of the full-scale war. Recently, the project was presented at the film market of the Karlovy Vary festival.

Other works

In addition to feature films, Lukich has worked on the series "Sex, Insta and ZNO" and "Kings of the Ward". He is also a member of the European Film Academy.
