During the WWDC 2026 conference, Apple made a candid admission that has been discussed on user forums for years: the standard search on iPhone was not working efficiently enough. However, Cupertino's leadership did not stop at stating the facts. During the presentation, developers introduced a completely updated search engine, as well as a number of unique artificial intelligence features for working with photos and financial calculations.
New Search Architecture and Email Sorting
"We have all experienced that moment when you are looking for something that is definitely on the device, but it simply does not appear. Therefore, in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, we have completely rebuilt the very foundation of search," said Stacy Ford, Vice President of OS Program Management, from the stage.
At the heart of the updates lies a revamped Search Index architecture — a deep intelligent catalog that the device creates for all user content. The system will conduct a total re-indexing, reprocessing and reordering not only new but also all old files.
Significant changes have affected the Mail client. A new ranking system with a unique sorting algorithm has been implemented. Now, the system instantly brings to the top exactly those emails that the user is looking for, regardless of the sending date. This allows you to find important documents, such as old airline tickets, even if they were received on another device.
Dictation with Google Gemini and Competition with Third-Party Apps
Apple announced a new system dictation based on the Apple Intelligence model in partnership with the Google Gemini neural network. The function is integrated directly into the standard keyboard and is available in all applications — from messengers to work notes.
The main feature of the update is complete contextual speech cleaning. AI acts as a professional editor:
- Removal of filler words: The system automatically cuts out thought pauses from the text.
- Automatic formatting: The neural network places punctuation marks, corrects spelling errors, and adjusts letter case, taking into account the meaning of the sentence.
With this step, Apple is effectively declaring war on popular third-party AI dictation apps, such as Wispr Flow or Willow. The company began limiting competitors as early as iOS 26.4, making it more difficult for them to access quick activation via the keyboard. Now, with a built-in free alternative from Gemini, Apple fully duplicates Google's successful experience with their Gboard keyboard on Android.
Spatial Photo Editing
The Photos app has received a powerful tool called Reframe, based on generative AI. The function allows you to correct mistakes made during shooting. If the horizon is tilted, there is an extra object in the frame above your head, or a direct gaze is lost, AI will help change the perspective.
The user can drag the photo on the screen, changing the viewing angle as if they had taken a step to the side at the moment of shooting. At the same time, the device automatically blurs the shifted photos in real time and flawlessly redraws them using neural networks, preserving the authenticity of the scene.
Meanwhile, the Extend tool debuts in iOS 27, allowing you to "stretch" the boundaries of the photo without losing details. The Cleanup function has also been significantly modernized, which now removes random people or objects from the frame with higher quality and realistic space filling.
Financial AI and Receipt Analysis
Another innovation solves the problem of inconvenient calculations in a group. Apple has integrated financial AI directly into the camera lens. Just point your iPhone at a restaurant receipt, and a special Siri mode will recognize the text and amounts, making each item interactive.
"Point your iPhone at the bill, select with your finger exactly the dishes or drinks you ordered personally, and the system will automatically generate and send separate personalized payment requests to other participants via Apple Cash," explained Apple Vice President of Software Sebastian Marino-Mes.
Since the function is integrated into the native ecosystem and works through iMessage, users will no longer have to download third-party utilities like SplitWise or Tab. In addition, for those who monitor their nutrition, an option to analyze the composition of dishes has been added: if you point the camera at food, Siri will instantly analyze its contents.
